Die Manic, the debut java game from developers Itch Design, bundles two games into one. A tetris clone and a Bejeweled-style puzzler, both reworked to feature dice, combined into one attractive-sounding package. Sounds too good, doesn't it puzzle fans? Well maybe it is. br>
The first game is 'Die Dropper', which plays similarly (VERY similarly) to Tetris. Instead of the bricks of the classic game, coloured dice fall down and it's up to you to align three or more dice by colour or number. I can deal with rip-offs, I'm willing to forgive unoriginality if the game's fun, but Die Dropper just doesn't impress at all. One of the reasons Tetris works so well is the way it involves geometry - it takes thinking to fit the different shapes into the spaces properly. Die Dropper is boring because the shapes are all the same; square dice; and matching up the numbers and colours quickly becomes a chore. Add to that the fact that to complete one level takes much longer than it should, and you have at least one half of a game that doesn't exactly work.
