Bajaj Auto unveils Small Car with a Mileage of 34 kmpl

India's oldest two wheeler manufacturer made history today by unveiling it's small car prototype which is expected to come into production in about two years time. The car would be developed jointly by Nissan, Renault and Bajaj and would compete head on with Tata's much hyped 1 lakh rupee car ($2500 car) and other manufacturers offerings in the same space. Bajaj has to a large extent spoilt Tata's party by unveiling it's small car just about 2 days before Tata launches their small car at the Auto Expo 2008. With it's small car Bajaj would be for the first time entering the four wheeler market and its confident that it would make a successful debut. Bajaj's small car is a four door, four seater compact urban hatchback with a tallboy design. The car looks rather neat and has a better rear end than the front. The interior design is spartan but modern with the dashboard having a centrally mounted instrument cluster (like the Chevrolet Spark). The prototype has a two cylinder engine, a wheel base of two meters and is only about three meters in length. The car comes with a unique manual plus auto transmission system. The base version of the car will come with air conditioning and will meet basic safety and emission norms. Bajaj would be planting both diesel and petrol engines into its small car with fuel efficiency being the primary focus in either versions. Bajaj hasnt revealed the pricing of its small car but it's likely to be around the Rs. 1.5-1.75 lakh mark. The small car will ultimately rolled out into select international markets as well.
