you could use softwares such as oxygen phone manager, mobtime, mobius, mobiledit
or Nokia PC Suite to backup your sms!

or like what the others said, backup with programs on your phone and export to your computer via ir, bt, or cable!

    PINOY!

As the c:\system\mail\index file is recreated at each phone startup, I guess your phone takes several minutes to boot up... It's not a goos idea holding more than 100-200 messages on the phone.
Store them on your PC using my freeware ReadSMS program!

It's quite rough, being a pre-release version, but it already can save all your messages into an HTML file, which you can easily read and reformat using an html editor or Excel (2003 or later).

It works fine with my Motorola a1000; some users have problem on p800; don't know about other phones.
    Please report any problem.

it's in italian... but DOWNLOAD link should be quite self-explanatory...

    Instructions:
    - copy c:\system\mail from phone to PC
    - let ReadSMS work on that folder
    - look for the HTML file created in c:\ folder: it contains your messages. They should be divided by sent/received... if your phone is compatible iwth mine.

    P.S.
Oh, BTW, there's also a "Go to English version" link on the page!
