A week to the day since NEC launched its new SX-9 supercomputer, the company has its first order.
Tohoku University in the northern Japanese city of Sendai has ordered a 16-node system, the computer maker said. The new computer should achieve a peak performance of 26.2T Flops (floating point operations per second) making it the fastest SX-series supercomputer in Japan, according to NEC.
The machine will be used at the university's Information Synergy Center. The center supports scientists working in cutting-edge fields such as aeronautics and space, environmental simulations, IT and nanotechnology and has a long history of using NEC computers. It employed an NEC SENAC-1 shortly after it opened in 1969 and became and early customer for NEC supercomputers with an SX-1 in 1986.

Intel pushes forward with updated dual-core Itanium 2
Intel is shipping an updated version of its dual-core Itanium 2 server processor, called Montvale. But don't expect to see a dramatic improvement in performance from the new chips, despite the addition of several new features.
Made using the same 90-nanometer (nm) process technology used to produce the existing Itanium 2 9000 series of processors, Montvale -- formally known as the Itanium 2 9100 series chips -- offers incremental improvements, including a faster front-side bus on some models and features that lower power consumption in certain situations and improve reliability.
"Essentially, this is a follow-on product to the current one," said Eddie Toh, regional platforms marketing manager in Intel Asia-Pacific's Server Platforms Group.
Itanium 2 processors are designed for high-end servers mainly used in specialized applications, such as finance and banking.
Some 9100 models run at slightly higher clock speeds than their predecessors but offer the same amount of on-chip cache. For example, the high-end 9150M runs at 1.66GHz, uses a 667MHz front-side bus and has 24M bytes of cache, while the older 9050 runs at 1.6GHz, uses a 533MHz front-side bus, and sports 24M bytes of cache. Both chips will be available for US$3,692 in 1,000-unit quantities, a standard pricing method for processors, Intel said.
The faster front-side bus and higher clock speeds in the 9100 series still offer respectable performance gains of around 19% over the 9000 series, Toh said, citing the results of testing done by Intel. The 9100 models that offer the higher speeds include an 'M' alongside their model numbers to differentiate them from those using the slower 533MHz clock speed, which carry an 'N.'

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster believes Apple is taking $18 per month for each iPhone subscriber under its deal with AT&T.
Apple has confirmed it has reached a revenue deal with AT&T, but has never revealed what it is. Munster -- who once thought Apple was receiving $3 per subscriber -- has changed his mind based on information gleaned from Apple's most recent financial report.
Apple's accounts describe $118 million in iPhone and iPhone-related revenue during the quarter. Apple has previously confirmed plans to account for iPhone (and Apple TV) sales across a two-year period.
Munster took the 1.4 million iPhones Apple's sold so far, took away the 250,000 units Apple said it believes were bought to unlock from AT&T's network, and calculates that 1.15 million revenue-generating iPhones contributed to Apple's quarter.
If Munster's estimates are correct, AT&T will pay Apple $432 per iPhone subscriber across the two-year life of the contract.

Take movies and photos on the move, with the PSP Camera.
Launching across Europe on May 16, the PSP Camera combines existing PSP functionality with the ability to take your own movies and photos.
This nifty piece of kit fits neatly into place on top of your PSP and incorporates a microphone for continuous audio recording, plus a vertical, 180 degree mount to position the camera lens either facing you - as you look into the screen - or directly away.
Capacity varies based on resolution and the size of Memory Stick Duo being used, but on a 4GB Memory Stick you can easily capture over two hours of video or 40,000 photos.
To make full use of the hardware and support your creativity, Go!Cam comes with access to Go!Edit, an editing software package with the ability to enhance your movies and photos with sound and graphical effects. System Software 3.00 is required to use both the PSP Camera and Go!Edit, which can be downloaded for free.

If you'd asked me a week ago -- and as a matter of fact, someone did -- I'd have said that you could sum up the high-definition disc war like this: Blu-ray is selling a lot of software, and HD DVD is aggressively pushing hardware. Essentially, each side has banked on either the chicken or the egg.
In scenarios like these, industry observers look for knockout punches (rare), or potential tipping points (a bit more common). We may be witnessing one right now: as part of its "pre-Black Friday" promotion, Wal-Mart will be offering Toshiba's entry-level HD-A2 player (soon to be replaced by the HD-A3) for a mere $98.97 -- making it a lot easier for cash-strapped consumers to get into the HD world at their own pace.
