Talking The Noobs Guide To The PSP

The Noobs Guide To The PSP

First of all, you'll need a Mini-B USB cable. (Can be found at your local Game-Stop) Connect your USB cable to the back of your PC.

When you put your Memory-Stick DUO/PRO DUO in the PSP you must first format before you do anything else. Turn on the PSP and scroll over to 'Settings', then scroll down to 'System Settings'. Press the 'X' button. Now, scroll down to 'Format Memory Stick(tm)', and press 'X'. Select 'Yes'. (You just successfully formatted your Memory-Stick!!!) Now put your PSP in USB Mode and lets begin...

How To Put "Stuff" On Your PSP

    1. Music
Turn on your computer and put your PSP is in USB mode. (/Settings/USB Connection/) On your computer, open up the "My Computer" Folder. Open the 'Removable Disk Drive' that is your PSP. (examples: F: X: J: D: Ect.) Inside this folder open up the "PSP" folder. You should see four new folders "GAME, MUSIC, PHOTO, SAVEDATA." "MUSIC" is where we will put the music.
Take your favorite mp3 file/s from your PC and drag it to the "MUSIC" folder.
Undo the USB Connection and (On the PSP) scroll over to "Music" and press 'X'. You should see the mp3 file. Select it, crank up the volume, press 'X', and listen to your song!

    2. Photo
You should see four new folders "GAME, MUSIC, PHOTO, SAVEDATA." "PHOTO" is where we will put the Photos. Take your favorite jpg file/s from your PC and drag it to the "PHOTO" folder. Undo the USB Connection and (On the PSP) scroll over to "Photo" and press 'X'. You should see the jpg file. Select it, press 'X', and view your picture!

    3. Video
There are Two Methods for video.

    Method #1. NO Converting (Easier)

As for where to get the video file/s that is up to you. I'll only say that there is a wide selection of PSP ready video files on this site. you'll have unlimited access to hundreds of downloads.
After you download a MP4 file it will be named something like "M4V00001.MP4" DON'T CHANGE THE FILE NAME, it won't work if you do.
Move the .MP4 File to the 100MNV01 folder your removable disk should look like this: F:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/M4V00001.MP4. Undo the USB Connection and (on the PSP) scroll over to "Video" Press 'X' and select your video file press 'X' and your watching a video on your PSP!!!

    Method #2. Converting. (Harder)
First of all, your going to need a video converter (Download PSP Video 9:Here) Once PSP Video 9 is installed on your PC we're ready to begin.

If your getting your video files from a source other that PSP Crazy, then they're probably not in MP4 format and need to be converted. Open PSP Video 9 and on the left choose 'Convert'. Now click 'Transcode New Video'. choose the video file, (.mpg .avi .wmv ect.) and then click 'Start'. On the top, you can see the progress on the file as it is converting. once the file is done converting, put your PSP in USB Mode, and on the left choose 'Copy'. highlight the .Mp4 and on the bottom, choose 'Copy Video to PSP'. Once the file has been copied to the PSP, get out of the USB Connection. On the PSP, scroll over to "Video" Press 'X' and play your Video.

    4. Homebrew
Note: #1. Running Homebrew on your PSP may cause eventual damage, don't blame me if you screw up your PSP. #2. If you get in any sort of illegal trouble (like playing pirated games) don't blame me.

Homebrew currently runs on only these firmware versions:
Note: To check your current Firmware version, scroll to /Settings/System Settings/System Information/

    1.0

    1.5

    2.0

    2.1

    2.5

    2.6

Running Homebrew on a 1.5 PSP
Running Homebrew on a PSP V. 1.5 is very simple. For this example we'll use a Homebrew application called "Book-R" (a simple text viewer) Download Book-R HERE (Download latest version(You'll need a zip archiver like WinZip WinRar 7zip ect.) Once Book-r is downloaded and unzipped, we're ready to begin. open the Folder called 'bookr-0.6.0-bin'. Inside this folder will be two folders and a read me.txt file. Copy the two folders (bookr and bookr%) to /PSP/GAME of your memory stick. on your PSP scroll over to 'Game/Memory-Stick' and start up 'Book-R book reader'
Congratulations. You just ran Homebrew on your 1.5 PSP!!!!!!!

Running Homebrew on a 2.0 PSP
For this, you'll need the EBOOT Loader by fanjita. Download HERE (click "EBOOT Loader" on the left (you'll need a RAR archiver like WinRar) Once Downloaded and unRared, copy "a.bin,l_09.bin and tsr.bin" to the Removable Disk that is your PSP. Now, open F:/PSPGAME/ and the psp/game/ folder that you downloaded. Copy "loader09.cfg, loadmenu.tga, loadmenu09.pbp and loadmenu09sort.pbp" from psp/game, to F:/PSP/GAME.
Now, open the psp/photo folder that you downloaded, and copy "EBOOT loader 09" to F:/PSP.PHOTO. Open the "bookr-0.6.0-bin" folder and copy "bookr" to F:/PSP/GAME/.
Undo USB Connection and scroll to "Photo" select the "EBOOT Loader 09" folder and the screen should turn black for a second and then the Eboot loader menu will display. press 'X'
Congratulations. You just ran Homebrew on your 2.0 PSP!!!!!!!

Note: Past this point the only way to run homebrew, is to have the PSP UMD Game "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories"(GTA:LCS for short)

Running Homebrew on a 2.1/2.5/ PSP
For this, you'll need "eLoader for GTA beta".
go to http://fanjita.org/, and scroll down to: "28 Jan 2006 : eLoader for GTA beta" and find the "here" that lets you download it. Download and UnRAR it.

This package allows you to run some standard PSP homebrew on any version of Grand Theft Auto,
and PSP firmware version v2.0, v2.01 and v2.5.
It's an initial test of the loader, that doesn't support the full range of homebrew, but works
well enough for an initial release.
Please note also the new name for the EBOOT Loader - "eLoader".

    To install:
    ===========

Use WinRAR to unpack the contents of this package into the root (topmost) folder on your memory stick. Note that if
you have an existing GTA savegame that uses slot 5, then this will be overwritten by the eLoader savegame.
You can see which slots you are using by the folder names - ULES00182SX, ULES00151SX or ULUS10041SX : X is the slot number.
To make sure that the eLoader is not auto-started by GTA, you can copy another GTA savegame folder off your memory
stick, and then back onto the memory stick now.
Now copy the "bookr" folder into F:/PSP/GAME/

    To use:
    =======

Start up GTA as normal. When it has loaded, select "Load Game", select the eLoader savegame and
confirm the load as normal. After a short delay, the eLoader menu should appear. Select "Book-R" using the 'X' button.
Congratulations. You just ran Homebrew on your 2.1/ 2.5/PSP!!!!!!!

Running Homebrew on a 2.6 PSP
Go to http://fanjita.org and scroll to, "31 Jan 2006 : Homebrew for all firmwares!" and find the "here" that lets you download it. Download and UnRAR it.

This package allows you to run some standard PSP homebrew on any version of Grand Theft Auto,
    and PSP firmware version v2.6.
It's an initial test of the loader, that doesn't support the full range of homebrew, but works
well enough for an initial release.
Please note also the new name for the EBOOT Loader - "eLoader".

    To install:
    ===========

Use WinRAR to unpack the contents of this package into the root (topmost) folder on your memory stick. Note that if
you have an existing GTA savegame that uses slot 5, then this will be overwritten by the eLoader savegame.

To make sure that the eLoader is not auto-started by GTA, you can copy another GTA savegame folder off your memory
stick, and then back onto the memory stick now.
    Now copy "bookr" into F:/PSP/GAME/

    To use:
    =======

Start up GTA as normal. When it has loaded, select "Load Game", select the eLoader savegame and
confirm the load as normal. After a short delay, the eLoader menu should appear. Select the homebrew to run using
the D-Pad, and the X button. You can select a CPU speed with the L + R shoulder buttons, or press START to restart
    your PSP.
To return to the menu, you can usually hold the L+R shoulder buttons, then hold START for a few seconds. This doesn't
    work for every application.
The HOME button doesn't work, this is a known problem.

Wink Tutorial on how to run .dax file's

Here's a Tutorial on how to run .dax file's.

First youl need a daxziso loader you can get the newest version in the "Downloads" section.

    - Copy the folders PSP and DAXZISO in the root of your memory stick.

    - Copy your (.dax) formatted iso to ms0:/ISO
    - Execute DAX ZISO Loader. Select your iso (normal or compressed) or "Run inserted UMD", press X to start inmediatly the iso/umd with the previously saved config, or press square to go to the configuration screen.

Configuration screen: you'll have to choose the emulation mode and other parameter.

    * Explanation and compatibility of differents emulation modes:

    - Off: the iso won't be emulated and the program will exit to the system menu. This method only has sense if you want to emulate the flash0 & flash1.

    - System menu. It returns to the system menu, letting you to load the game through the system menu or another loader like mphgameloader or FastLoader("Start inserted UMD").
This is one of the most compatible modes, it is more compatible than the UMDEMULATOR
    system menu.

    - Direct load. It will directly load your iso. At the moment, it seems that this mode is
less compatible than the "System menu" and "Direct LoadExec" ones. Be always sure
that you try the different modes to see which one is the best for your games.

    - Copy load. It will copy the game boot.bin file to ms0:/DAXZISO/DBOOT.BIN and it will
    load-exec it.

    - MPHGL Direct. This mode needs the file "ms0:/DAXZISO/mphloader.prx" of the
MPHGameLoader application, which is already included.

Note that this is a modified version of mphloader.prx which will search the flash0 and
flash1 in ms0:/DAXZISO/flash0 and ms0:/DAXZISO/flash1. If you want still use the older
folders at ms0:/MPHGameLoader/flash0 and ms0:/MPHGameLoader/flash1, simply replace the mphloader.prx of DAXZISO with the original one from ms0:/MPHGameLoader/mphloader.prx

It seems to be the less compatible mode of all.
It's more compatible to use the system menu one and execute mphgameloader, or the modes
"MPHGL System", "MPHGL VSHExec" and "MPHGL LoadExec".

    - UMDEmulator:

This mode requires the file ms0:/DAXZISO/UMDEMU.PBP, which is already included.

This mode will load the original umdemulator letting it to load isos in dax format.
The compatibility of different load modes inside UMDEMULATOR should be more or less the same that those from DAXZISO, although it may have some differences.

    - MPHGL System. This mode returns to the system menu: in that moment you can run
your emulated umd from the system menu. Instead of executing the disc, the firmware will execute the file "ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP" which will load your 2.XX game.

The required file "ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP" is already included.

The compatibility of this mode is greater than "MPHGL Direct" and exactly the same than
exiting to the system menu and then running mphgl.

    - MPHGL VSHExec. With this mode your psp will reboot and after that it will auomatically
    run MPHGameLoader ("ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP").

The compatibility of this mode is greater than "MPHGL Direct" and exactly the same than
exiting to the system menu and then running mphgl.

    - Direct LoadExec. This mode looks like "Direct Load", but instead of using the
sceKernelLoad/StartModule functions, it uses sceKernelLoadExec; because of that, the system will have more free memory, and this makes it more compatible than "Direct Load" and almost as compatible as "System Menu". The only problem is that it always will run the BOOT.BIN file (even if that option is in off), because sceKernelLoadExec fails with EBOOT.BIN. If you have one of those game that in umdemulator only worked with copy load, try this one, it loads faster and there are chances that it work.

    - MPHGL LoadExec. This mode is as compatible as "MPHGL System" and
"MPHGL VSH Exec", but it loads faster. However it has a problem: it doesn't work depending on the wlan switch position. In my psp, it works with the wlan position in on, but it may be different on your psp, or even different from a game to another.

This is NOT a DAXZISO bug. I've tried to execute the mphgl eboot.pbp with other homebrews programs that also use the sceKernelLoadExec function, and without iso emulation (original umd), and the results where the same: depending on the wlan switch position it worked or not. I cannot solve a bug that it's not mine.

    - RUNUMD LoadExec. This mode will run RUNUMD, and it will let you load isos with it.
Because of a special patch that is applied in this mode to the UMDEMULATOR core to fix a compatibility issue with RUNUMD, the flash0 and flash1 emulation are broken in this mode.

This mode requires the runumd pbp (folder without %) to be in ms0:/DAXZISO/RUNUMD.PBP
This file is NOT included, you'll have to provide it.

    - RUNUMD System. This mode returns to the system menu. After that, you can run RUNUMD with the disc icon of the firmware. You can also start runumd from the your memory stick if you want.

This mode also requires the file ms0:/DAXZISO/RUNUMD.PBP and it also has the flash
    emulation broken.

Note: if you use one of the other "System Menu" modes and you start runumd, it will gives you the famous error of "patcher failed", because daxziso doesn't apply the special patch to those modes in order to keep compatibility with flash emulation.

    - RUNUMD Direct. This mode is like "RUNUMD LoadExec", but it doesn't reboot the firmware, so it loads faster and it doesn't delete a background program from memory. The compatibility should be less than "RUNUMD LoadExec", although it seems still to be very good.
