Post Review of NOKIA 6630 apps downloaded here

review of applications i have downloaded here and tried (nokia 6630 s60)

i didnt want to post each review separately so i decided to compile them all in one post...

this might help other people here who are interested in a certain app

    ------------------
call counter --- installs but doesnt work (tried it on a 6600 as well)

anti-thief --- installs but doesnt work. when you click on the app to start, it doesnt start (tried it on a 6600 as well)

    mobile security --- doesnt work

mydiary --- doesnt work. also, when you install this app, it will also install other apps as well (i think it was three other apps)

philips camcorder s60 version --- there are a lot of versions of phiips camcorder but the only one that worked fine was the 1.03 version (tried it on a 6600 as well)

phone secure 1.12 --- same problem with anti-thief. however, i tried it on a 6600 and it starts. havent tested whether it will indeed sound an alarm if you send a sms message

avec radio --- works but not as i thought. its a radio but you will need gprs connection for it to work

phone bites april fools --- works but not as described. the description says insert weird and funny sounds into your live calls and voicemail and revel in their confusion. dont know about the voicemail thing but it doesnt work on live calls. tried this once while having a conversation with my girlfriend but she didnt hear anything

sms counter --- works fine. a good app to check on sms usage. very useful for me as it tells me how much sms i have sent (and received) each day

image plus 2.13 --- works fine. a good app to edit images and place additional things like a frame, a beard, flowers, arrows, etc. Nokia 6630 has a built in photo editor but it only has the basic functions like adjust contrast, brightness, etc. features that this app also has plus more.

call recorder --- works fine. a good app to record calls. i set it to auto record on each call i make/receive. especially useful when i have a conversation with someone and the details are quite sketchy. i just play the recorded conversation and listen carefully on details i may have missed. then i delete the conversion. files are saved on amr (or wave) so it doesnt take too much memory space.

msg storer --- works fine. app to transfer sms to txt file for storage (like on a PC). i use this app so i can transfer quotes to other phones free via bluetooth

smart birthday --- works fine. app to integrate an alarm to contacts. by default you can add a birthday on your contacts but you cannot set an alarm, you have to do it separately. with this app, it can be done in a few simple steps

handy photo safe --- works fine. app to hide images from view. if you want to hide some images in case someone else browses your phone, this app is for you. however, one drawback is that images stored in the 'safe' will be transferred to phone memory.

smart crypto --- works fine. this app can encrypt any file on your phone. a better alternative to handy photo safe. however, one drawback though is that if you want to view the file you encrypted, you have to decrypt it first, exit the app and open the file with the corresponding app for it (e.g. realplayer for videos)

simworks anti virus --- works fine. protects your phone from viruses. sets an interval in which it will scan your phone (max of 12 hours--it will scan your phone every 12hours). one thing that got me apprehensive about this program is that on my PC, my anti-virus detected a symbian virus on the installation file itself. though its probably harmless, it is still cause for some concern

mum sms --- works fine. app to hide sms from your inbox. it can be configured to add a certain number (or contact) to the blacklist or the whitelist. if its in the blacklist, if i receive an sms from that certain number, it will automatically be hidden from the inbox. hence, you wont get a 1 new message but rather a custom message you want from the app itself (like oops..sorry, false alarm you have no new messages). only problem with the app is that if you receive around 3 consecutive messages that is in the blacklist, monitoring will be turned off. you will have to turn off the phone and start it again to be able to turn on monitoring again.

profimail --- works fine. has two apps, profimail and profiexplorer. i personally just use the profiexplorer. its a very good file manager since it will bypass the built in protection on certain phones like the nokia 6630 in which you wont be able to send files like .sis through bluetooth. with this file manager, you can send these files without any problem

jumbo sms --- works fine. useful app. contains tons of quotes and templates you can use. simply open the app, browse to the template you want and select send sms. (limited to 160 characters only)

smart movie 2.75 --- works fine. havent fully tested this app yet but so far, i havent encountered any problems yet

***there were other apps that didnt work but i couldnt quite recall them anymore. i will try to keep a list in the future of all apps i installed so i would know which ones worked and which ones dont.

Balg, it's a very nice review.
It'll be very useful for other 6630 owner, especially a new one.
Keep up the good work. Just edit the page regularly.

    Requiem for a Drams

i will update this section regularly...

when a certain app doesnt work on my 6630, i try it on another unit as per indicated like the 6600 to see if the problem is the model of the phone or the app itself.

media safe ver. 1.0 (mediasafe_v10-XiMpDA.sis) --- very good app. a better alternative to handyphoto safe (which only stores images) and smart crypto (can encrypt any file but you cant view the files--you have to decrypt first then use the appropriate app to view the file). however, there seems to be a problem with the app posted here. when you first run the app, you are required to set up a password. however, when you exit the app and start it again, you will find out that the password you set up doesnt work. it will tell you incorrect password. im still trying to find another version of this app as i like this app very much. with this app, i wont have any need to have two separate apps for encrypting my files (handy photo safe and smart crypto) so if anyone has another version of this app please post

---> just checked.. it seems there is another file here that is supposedly the fix for this app. will try it out later. i had tried the installation procedure mentioned here but it didnt fix the problem so i might try downloading another copy

opera 6.2 full (opera6.2_6600_7610_full_Dotsis.sis)--- the app by gsoft.. this is the full app so you dont need to ***** it anymore.. very good browser for phone. a lot better than the default app. for one thing, you can open web pages in opera that you wont be able to open if you are using the default app

MMcommunication (mmcommunication.sis) -- installs but doesnt open after installation

talx any key (3_talx-any_key_crc-symboss.sis) --- installs but doesnt open after installation

digiaimagespy (imagespy_2.04_full_dotsis.sis)--- works fine (there are two versions of this here one is digiaimagespy.sis which is not the full version). i didnt find much use for this app after trying it

blackballer (blackballer_1.1.2_full_6630_7610_dotsis .sis) ---- works fine. it just didnt suit my needs

call cheater 1.02 (callcheater_1.02_full_dotsis.sis) --- works fine. just didnt suit my needs. plus using it is quite a hassle. you need to constantly change profiles for different sound effects

Control freak 2.0 (controlfreak2.0_full_6600_7610_dotsis.s is) --- works fine. just couldnt fully test it since it requires bluetooth connection with another device.

loan calculator (loancalc.series60.sis) --- same with my diary. installs other apps as well besides the loan calculator itself. doenst work. an error pops up and says contact the author (same with other similar apps from manufacturer). removing this app is quite cumbersome.. you have to remove around 3-4 apps

first aid guide (firstaid.jar) --- works fine. java app. not really that useful but it can be handy at times. contains info on what to do in certain cases wherein first aid is needed (like bleeding, heart attack, burns, etc)

smart vcard (smartvcard.v1.01.n6600-ximpda.sis) -- works fine. app to export/import vcf files to your contacts list. didnt find it very useful in my situation

smart dialer (moov.software.smart.dialer.v1.1-ximpda.sis) ---- works fine. app that supposedly makes it easier to dial numbers as it will show the contacts phone number on the left side and the name of the contact on the right side. i mentioned supposedly since in my experience, nothing really changed. dialing is still the same

ebook reader (readm_s60_all_in_one.sis) ---- works fine. app to allow you read ebooks (it will install codecs for different formats). just havent tried it yet since i dont have any ebooks on hand in my cp

virus guard (virusguard_7_s60.sis) --- works but you need gprs connection to enable a trial (or full) version. otherwise, you cant use the app

sms guard 1.0 (sms_guard_1.0_full_dotsis.sis) --- works fine. but, compared to mumsms, this app pales in comparison. it doesnt have realtime monitoring, so you can only hide messages by opening the app. and it only covers inbox messages not folders.

thats it for now.. i will need to place a new set of apps in my phone to be able to try them out so the next update may take some time

    update

    Battery.Rebuild.And.Maintenance.v1.2
---installs ok but doesnt work (some kind of error occurs) help file says its for series 60 phones

celltrack (celltrack.sis) --- installs and runs ok. just didnt find it very useful

flirtalert --- installs and seems to run ok. I just dont have any idea on how its suppose to work

superimpose ---- no problems, works ok

operator logo manager --- no problems. very good app. only drawback is that it can only place images as the logo not text. anyone have a similar app to this?

    update

pdf reader 1.35 --- nice app. one problem encountered though was that it cant open folders, it will exit if you open a folder. so you will have to move your pdf files into the root directory (eg c:\*.pdf) for you to be able to open it

also, you wont be able to open files using a file manager. you need to open files from the application itself

symboot - works fine. useful app as older phones dont have an autorestart feature yet

    update

quadpic - works ok... Good app. you can take a single pic and have four copies of it (in a single pic).. with several options like frames. although its a bit tricky to use when just starting out, once you do get a hang of it, you should see this app to be quite useful

timedspy - works ok.... very good app. you can use this app to take pictures (multiple pictures at that) even without the phone in your hand. This is somewhat like a self timer function only it can take more than just one pic at a time (you can set it to take as many pictures as you want--with settings to choose from like the time between shots). This app will be very useful not just to 6630 users (its default camera already has a self timer function) but especially to those whose phones dont have a self timer function.

tried it as well on a 6600 and it works fine

opera 8.0 (the aspac version) - its a free upgrade to my opera 6.2 so i chose this version over the ******* versions. very good app. i can really see improvements in my browsing. page loading has become a lot faster than before. only drawback here is that these improvements will only work for phones which support 3G (or so I've read) but you can still use this app even if you are using phones like 6600

    =========
i havent been able to update this lately as what i have been testing out lately have been games downloaded here and not apps. but i will slowly keep on updating

Eti camcorder 2 (beta version) - a bit difficult to navigate at 1st as by default, the langauge is in chinese. I had to grope and try out every function to find the english setting. When, i finally got it to english i then tried the settings. It juz simply said profile pc,phone, editing.

Tried all three. Found out later that editing takes more space. Next is pc. lastly, the phone profile, file saved using ths profile is juz a bit larger than 3gp file (on the same length of video)

Then, i found out what was missing--Audio--it doesnt record audio, juz video.

Overall, a useful app for those who want to save in avi format (e.g. those that dont want to convert 3gp).

This is going to be very useful for those using phones like 6600,3660 (better than eti, philips, default app)

however, for those using fones like 6630,this wont b very useful as the default video recorder is better with its capability to record both video and audio.

ETI Camcorder 2 (full retail posted by m1v3cs) - same interface as beta version with two noticeable difference

one is the ETI player embedded (before the files would be opened using smartmovie-now an ETI player is included)

second is audio... in the beta version, there was no audio when i took videos.. this time there is audio

however, there is a drawback.. when you try to play the video using gallery and not the my videos explorer by ETI, the video wont play... so you need to use the my videos explorer included to view the videos. also, the video taken doesnt seem to play audio when i play it using smartmovie

also, it seems that when you delete the video, not all files associated with it is erased from the system

the inf file is left, i had to delete it manually

    ============
i had tested phone profile as compared to that of the default video

the default video seems to be brighter (the backlight option of the camcorder 2 was already on)

the camcorder 2 file generated was bigger in size compared to that of the default 3gp (avi file was 243KB in 9 sec vs 197KB 3gp 12 sec)

Hmm, seems like the inf file is needed by the eti player to b able to play videos with audio. Otherwise, it wont play

tried having smart movie files played using eti player. I get the same error as when i try to play the file using gallery.

So thats the main problem. The files u get from the camcorder wil only play using the eti player

the eti player cant play other types of avi files. Maybe a codec is needed to correct the problem

Tried playing the file on my pc. It runs ok and i can hear the audio on both smart movie files and camcorder files.

also, audio controls for eti player is not left and right. Its up and down (to reduce or increase the volume)

    =============
overall, this version came up with some improvements sorely lacking in the beta version. however, it would've been better if they just included audio and left out the eti player. or, they could have provided the eti player separately (but still part of the bundle, just 2 separate installers and one). that way, people will have the option to install the eti player or not.

this app came out with what was lacking in the beta version and thats good. but, eti still fell short of coming out with a very good app. perhaps they can do better with updates and later versions. for the meantime, i think i'll stick with my default recorder

just a small update on the camcorder 2 - the one posted by m1v3cs suddenly asked for a serial when i tried to record video today (i still havent uninstalled it even if I decided to stick to my default recorder--see review above)

not sure why, seems like im not the only one who had this problem. but oddly enough, not everyone is having this problem. hence, its quite difficult to pinpoint the cause of such

anyway, i tried the one posted by lovekonadj and it seems to have fixed the problem....will keep on monitoring this app
