Editorial Reviews:

The astounding yet true rags-to-riches saga of a homeless father who raised and cared for his son on the mean streets of San Francisco and went on to become a crown prince of Wall Street

At the age of twenty, Milwaukee native Chris Gardner, just out of the Navy, arrived in San Francisco to pursue a promising career in medicine. Considered a prodigy in scientific research, he surprised everyone and himself by setting his sights on the competitive world of high finance. Yet no sooner had he landed an entry-level position at a prestigious firm than Gardner found himself caught in a web of incredibly challenging circumstances that left him as part of the city's working homeless and with a toddler son. Motivated by the promise he made to himself as a fatherless child to never abandon his own children, the two spent almost a year moving among shelters, "HO-tels," soup lines, and even sleeping in the public restroom of a subway station.

Never giving in to despair, Gardner made an astonishing transformation from being part of the city's invisible poor to being a powerful player in its financial district.

More than a memoir of Gardner's financial success, this is the story of a man who breaks his own family's cycle of men abandoning their children. Mythic, triumphant, and unstintingly honest, The Pursuit of Happyness conjures heroes like Horatio Alger and Antwone Fisher, and appeals to the very essence of the American Dream.

Summary: The book and the movie do not compare
Comment: After reading many of the reviews, I decided to write my own brief review. I noticed that many people here are comparing the book to the movie. First and foremost, rarely does a movie do a book justice in my opinion. This book is not for the young and immature-minded individuals. There are certain parts in the book where he is very graphic, but it serves to tell the reader exactly what he was experiencing at the time. In my opinion, it must have took a lot for him to relive the moment he was sodomized.

Overall, if you have not seen the movie or read the book, I would encourage reading the book first. The world is not a lovely place where everyone holds hands and sings lovely songs. Racism still exist, and you have to think, he is writing in the mind of a black male growing up in times of segregation and outright racism. When I started reading this book, I could not put it down, which is why it receives 5 stars. The movie was watered down and somewhat inaccurate.

Summary: Many differences from the movie, still amazing
Comment: For those who have seen the movie, you will find many differences between the book and the film. The most noticeable difference is that in the book, Gardner tells the story of his entire life, while the movie begins during his adulthood. In addition, as one would expect, some artistic liberties were taken in the movie. Finally, one should be advised that the book is not nearly as family-friendly as the film.

All that being said, the book retains all the emotional impact of the movie. The amazing come-from behind story of Mr. Gardner is an inspiring read no matter who you are. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Fantastic book, wonderful inspiration!
Comment: I have really loved this book. I was looking for inspiration to get myself into action and to overcome quite a few important challenges in my life, and this book has really done it. I can really relate to the author Chris Gardner on so many aspects. For a start, I too am a single mother, and I could really feel for him when he was homeless with his toddler in the streets of Chicago, at the same time as trying to achieve his dream of starting a career as a broker (and getting out of poverty). The book is full of memorable and inspiring moments of his first 50 years of life, without ever loosing HOPE and his wonderful sense of humour! I have specially liked its message that it's all about DOING: working hard and persevering to achieve your goals and keeping focused. No magical thinking! It's extremely down to earth and empowering at the same time. Thank you so much Chris Gardner for sharing so much about yourself!

Summary: The pursuit of Nacracissim
Comment: An inspirational movie but an awful book.

I saw the movie first, then the book ruined it. He may be good at bagging chicks and selling stocks, but Chirs Gardner's writing is dreadfully uninspiring. Even with a terrific premise like his rags-to-richs story, he was unable to inspire me with his narrative.

The Chris Gardner in this book is nowhere near the man that Will Smith portrays. Hollywood has never let the truth stand in the way of making a good movie, but the movie execs outright lied when they claimed the motion picture is based on a true story. Okay, there was a own-on-his luck black man who made it in the financial Someone hand Gardner a Rubik's cube, I'd like to see that.
