It's a joy to announce that John Sandford is still doing everything right," wrote the Cleveland Plain Dealer about the second adventure of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers. "Virgil acts like the best series protagonists-becoming someone we just enjoy spending time with."
Virgil's always been known for having a somewhat active, er, social life, but he's probably not going to be getting too many opportunities for that during his new case. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort, where a woman has been shot while kayaking. The resort is for women only, a place to relax, get fit, recover from plastic surgery, commune with nature, and while it didn't start out to be a place mostly for those with Sapphic inclinations, that's pretty much what it is today.
Which makes things all the more complicated for Virgil, because as he begins investigating, he finds a web of connections between the people at the resort, the victim, and some local women, notably a talented country singer. The more he digs, the more he discovers the arrows of suspicion that point in many directions, encompassing a multitude of motivations: jealousy, blackmail, greed, anger, fear. Then he finds that this is not the first murder, that there was a second, seemingly unrelated one, the year before. And that there's about to be a third, definitely related one, any time now. And as for the fourth . . . well, Virgil better hope he can catch the killer before that happens. Because it could be his own.
Rich with the brilliant plotting and compulsively readable prose that are his hallmarks, Rough Country is another immensely satisfying tale by one of our very best suspense writers.

Customer Rating: Summary: Another winner from John Sandford Comment: I hope John Sandford never runs out of ideas. Rough Country is another excellent read with his trademark witty and amusing dialogue togther with a strong story line. Believable characters and good writing make this book as hard to put down as its predecessors were.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sandford's best in a while Comment: I've read all of Sandford's books since the very beginning, and generally enjoy them, although the last few "Prey" books have seemed pretty weak to me. This one, however, was the best Sandford book I've read in a while. I can't verbalize exactly why that is, but I think it has to do with how he laid the groundwork for a lot of possible motives up-front and gradually whittled down the list. Characters were introduced, investigated and dropped without feeling like blatant red herrings. I have to think this is how many real police investigations play out.
Customer Rating: Summary: 3 1/2 stars Comment: We are back again with Virgil Flowers (though I don't believe his 'nickname' shows up once in the book), in the latest from John Sandford. This time he is investigating a murder at a woman only lodge in the wilderness. But that much, you can get from just reading the dust jacket.
While I liked this book more than the previous one in the series, it still doesn't seem as good as the first Virgil novel. We still have the plot twists and turns that we all have come to expect, and the author's writing style is easy to read and the characters are somewhat believable. However, Virgil continues to be Lucas Davenport lite. He acts much more laid back and the author tries to differentiate Virgil from Lucas, but doesn't try hard enough in my opinion. Which hampers the story, as this book wasn't quite the page turner the earlier Lucas novels were as well as some of the characters in it are very one dimensional and their only contribution is very shallow sub-plots.
All in all, the book was easy to read and somewhat fun, but had very definite flaws in comparison to the author's larger body of work.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rough Country is a Smooth Read Comment: When the owner of a high-powered Twin Cities advertising agency is murdered at a remote lakeside resort special investigator, Virgil Flowers, has his vacation cut short.
The mystery itself is not better than others in this genre. What IS special is Mr. Sandford's ability to engage readers and make them feel as if they are observing the events.
Though the story is only worth four stars, the great characters, dialogue and easy-to-read style make "Rough Country" a five-star entertainment.
Customer Rating: Summary: I didn't want it to end! Comment: WOW! Sandford has done it again. I WAS going to say that he hasn't lost a step, but I'll revise that. He's getting better.
Virgil Flowers is becoming almost as interesting a character as is Lucas Davenport. You stay up late to finish this book, then are unhappy when it's over.
I can only hope that John Sandford keeps writing as long as I am alive. MORE. MORE.
