In a world of modern, involved, caring parents, why are so many kids aggressive and cruel? Where is intelligence hidden in the brain, and why does that matter? Why do cross-racial friendships decrease in schools that are more integrated? If 98% of kids think lying is morally wrong, then why do 98% of kids lie? What's the single most important thing that helps infants learn language? NurtureShock is a groundbreaking collaboration between award-winning science journalists Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. They argue that when it comes to children, we've mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis, they demonstrate that many of modern society's strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring--because key twists in the science have been overlooked. Nothing like a parenting manual, the authors' work is an insightful exploration of themes and issues that transcend children's (and adults') lives.

Customer Rating: Summary: Common sense Comment: NutureShock will make parents think. This book covers babies through teens. Much of this book is common sense. Topics covered are praise (false praise), teen rebellion, sibling rivalry, race, sleep, lying and gifted children and parents too involved. This book is well written. You do not have to have a doctorate to understand it.
The section on praise made me think. The author's do not support false or too much praise. False praise can bring a different set of problems. They continue by discussing arguments which are not all bad. Neither is all violent television shows bad. I guess all those "violent" cartoons I watched as a child weren't so bad after all.
NurtureShock is well written and easy to understand. This is not a child raising manual as much as a compilation of articles from recent studies. Most of the information as I stated before is common sense. Kids need sleep but do not usually get enough. Kids lie because there is no punishment for lying. If we over award our children eventually they will do nothing without an award. This book gave me a lot to think about.
Customer Rating: Summary: Makes you think! Comment: Excellent read. I highly recommend it to parents and educators. I shared treasures from it with my teenage kids and they really appreciated being seen, heard and understood.
Customer Rating: Summary: Every Parent, Teacher, and Teacher Educator needs to know... Comment: what is reported in this accessible, readable account of research that turns many common beliefs on their ear and gives interesting and useful interpretations of possible reasons why we have misunderstood what is essential parenting and teaching information.
Customer Rating: Summary: Are you ready to change? Comment: This book is not just new parenting information, it is new life saving information.
In a confusing time, a gift for our children!
Customer Rating: Summary: Eye opening Comment: Shows some real world research. I wish this book had been around when we were raising our niece and nephew. A lot of aha moments.
