Editorial Reviews:

Some bonds can never be broken...

Addie Downs and Valerie Adler will be best friends forever. That's what Addie believes after Valerie moves across the street when they're both nine years old. But in the wake of betrayal during their teenage years, Val is swept into the popular crowd, while mousy, sullen Addie becomes her school's scapegoat.

Flash-forward fifteen years. Valerie Adler has found a measure of fame and fortune working as the weathergirl at the local TV station. Addie Downs lives alone in her parents' house in their small hometown of Pleasant Ridge, Illinois, caring for a troubled brother and trying to meet Prince Charming on the Internet. She's just returned from Bad Date #6 when she opens her door to find her long-gone best friend standing there, a terrified look on her face and blood on the sleeve of her coat. "Something horrible has happened," Val tells Addie, "and you're the only one who can help."

Best Friends Forever is a grand, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure; a story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets. It's about living through tragedy, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends together.

Summary: no need chick lit
Comment: With so many good books out there my book club chose this one! It was boring and did not draw me in. I thought there would be more in depth discussion or story line about friendship between women, something to learn. The characters are not fully formed. It is more like a magazine piece of fiction. The main male character doesn't have enough to do as police chief but go after a small pool of blood found at the scene of a high school reunion. He launches an investigation that seemed unbelievable and disproportionate. It is really about the two women who grew up as friends and will come back together. One knows this from the very beginning and in the meantime we have to deal with an overweight main character who changes herself and looses weight! Isn't there something more for women than these plot lines.

Summary: Wasn't crazy about it
Comment: This was my first Jennifer Weiner novel, and it wasn't one that I was excited about. The storyline was boring and bland, and there's nothing deep to the characters. Makes me wonder if this was a book that Weiner was contracted to do and had to throw something together by a deadline? Not my favorite novel, but not the worst I've ever read. I'm told that I should read her book "Good in bed", and I might give that one a chance.

Summary: A big disappointment from a favorite author
Comment: Jennifer Weiner used to be one of my all time favorites! Good in Bed was fabulous, along with all of her others...until now. Best Friends Forever was an unlikely, unrealistic friendship with an anti-climatic plot. It goes on and on, with nothing really of interest happening. I never felt a connection to the characters. The plot was dull. It was supposed to be an exciting type of mystery, "Thelma and Louise" bestfriends forever dishy drama, yet it fell flat. Wait for the softcover or get it at the library, or better yet-- just skip it altogether. Hopefully the next is better...

Summary: Say what?
Comment: I kept rolling my eyes and saying to myself..."SAY WHAT"?

First of all the character of Valerie who shows up on Addie's doorstep and wants to go back to being best friends after fifteen years of absenteeism and after having really messed Addie over in high school, nope doesn't work for me.

Next Addie just throws her entire life over and goes for a joyride to Key West after said "friend" waltzes back into her life. Does not work for me again.

The two "friends" go to a bank where Addie withdraws ten thousand dollars of spending money for a trip to Key West and Valerie does not pay for anything. Nope still not working for me.

Valerie attempts to rob the bank teller when Addie makes the withdrawal. Then out of the goodness of her heart, Addie leaves $2000 for the bank teller since the bank teller says it is okay to rob her if Addie gives her $2000. Seriously flawed. In reality, everybody would have been arrested.

I can go on and on. The police detective who enters Addie's house without a warrant and meanders through the house smelling her clothing?????? Oh puhlllllllease.

Last but not least, do we really have to know how many times the police detective masturbates and to top it off how he masturbates and then cleans up after himself? Give me a break.

I could go on and on. Yes there is more that makes the book totally unrealistic.

The ending was abrupt and again I raised my eyebrows and said, "HUH"? Don't spend good money on this unless you are such a fan of Jennifer Weiner that you can't help yourself.

Summary: Not a believable story.
Comment: I have read several of Jennifer Weiner's books, but I just didn't like this one. The story is about two best friends, Valerie and Addie, who end up growing apart after a disasterous night out when they are in high school. We see the girls as young friends and we learn how their home environments end up shaping their lives. Unfortunately, I found the character development to be flat. I didn't like Val's character at all. She used people and then reconnected with Addie again years later just because she was in trouble and once again needed help.

I found their Thelma and Louise like road trip to be lame as well. It just didn't jive with the story. The ending with the quick romance was not believable either and the character of Jordan, the cop, was truly a messed up one. I usually like Jennifer Weiner's humor as well, but for me, this story wasn't her best written one.
