Editorial Reviews:

A New York real estate tycoon plunges to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of reasons to kill trot out their alibis. And then, in the suffocating grip of a record heat wave, comes another shocking murder and a sharp turn in a tense journey into the dirty little secrets of the wealthy. Secrets that prove to be fatal. Secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light.

Mystery sensation Richard Castle, blockbuster author of the wildly best-selling Derrick Storm novels, introduces his newest character, NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat. Tough, sexy, professional, Nikki Heat carries a passion for justice as she leads one of New York City's top homicide squads. She's hit with an unexpected challenge when the commissioner assigns superstar magazine journalist Jameson Rook to ride along with her to research an article on New York's Finest. PulitzerPrize-winning Rook is as much a handful as he is handsome. His wise-cracking and meddling aren't her only problems. As she works to unravel the secrets of the murdered real estate tycoon, she must also confront the spark between them. The one called heat.

Summary: Will the real Rchard Castle stand up?
Comment: For fans of the TV show " Castle", this is a treat. This book is supposedly written by the TV character, Richard Castle. The book follows the premise of the TV Show and reads like an episode from the weekly dramedy.

For those who have no idea who Castle is, then this would be a quick read. The plot involves a journalist who is shadowing a detective squad while doing research for a magazine article. As the Homicide Detective, Nikki Heat, chaffs at having a nosy reporter follow her and her team when trying to solve a high-profile murder, she also finds the journalist attractive. And he has his moments. He knows everyone in town, plays poker with judges, knows celebrities and con artists and provides his expertise whenever he wants. Not that the detectives welcome it, mind you, he just runs his mouth whenever.

Clues, twists and turns lead the detectives on a chase to locate the murderer among a list of suspects. Money, or lack of, a cheating wife, a cheating husband, and mob characters, all come together to create a fast-paced and enjoyable romp through a Manhattan Heat Wave. As the bodies stack up, so do the clues. Finding out whio is guilty may take longer than expected.

The book is full of dialogue and easy to follow. When the "author" acknowledges the real-life actors from the show, its all one can do to keep a straight face. The picture of the author is actor Nathan Fillion who plays Castle on the TV show. The bio on the inside flap refers to Castle, the character, so the real mystery here is who is the actual author of this book?

Summary: Fun & Fast Read
Comment: I love "Castle" and initially bought the book to support the show; however, "Heat Wave" turned out to be a really fun read...I could imagine Castle and Beckett in their various "aliases" in the book and it was like watching another episode. Great marketing, too! The book read really fast: next time I'd like to have a full-sized novel. I wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of the show--and anyone who likes a little mystery and humor!

Summary: Terrific fun.
Comment: I really enjoyed Andrew Marlowe's novelization of his show's characters and the fact that he relieves the sexual tension between the female detective and the writer in a way that could only be revealed through "fiction." If Castle and Beckett were to succumb to their hidden urges it would make their working relationship impossible (and would damage the series). But it does explain why Beckett is so ticked off by Castle's literary version of her. Nikki Heat can say and do things that Beckett can only fantasize about.

I enjoyed the novel very much and was not bothered in the least by its brevity. In addition to knowing the characters from the series, Marlowe excels in bringing "Castle's" fictional characters vividly to life with a minimum of words.

My favorite thing about the novel is that the writer clearly knows New York City well and, references to fictional restaurants and other businesses aside, the location details are highly accurate.

Regarding the "ghost writer," as mentioned on the acknowledgement page, the author's "partner in crime," is Terri Miller, Marlowe's wife, the show's co-producer and the scriptwriter of the excellent Halloween episode. It seems unlikely that another writer would call Marlowe's wife his "partner in crime."

Summary: Love it!
Comment: Almost as good as the show... and it only wins for the hotness of the lead actors ;)

Only 2/3rds of the way thru and loving it... completion has only been delayed by the inconvenience of work :)
