Editorial Reviews:

Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

Summary: They break often
Comment: I have had three of these and they all last about a little over a year. You have to keep them very clean and it is much worse than just cleaning out a cat box now and then. The plastic trays which catch the waste are not too expensive but they add up. Just be aware of that.

Summary: pretty good, hope it lasts.
Comment: we bought our first LitterMaid 4 years ago, a LM700. we didn't take special care of it really. I cleaned it well enough to keep it going and it avoided having any of the issues most people complain about... keep good litter in it, clear any jams, use bags in the trays.

that one broke some time this last summer, it would turn on and the motor would try to run then immediately stop and would just stay in the park position. so we bought a LM500. the LM500 would jam and fail about every 5th time so I took the opportunity to inspect the mechanism (since it was new and clean, working on an old one is no fun) and found that the LM500 was significantly cheaper than the LM700. the old one has dual stop and return sensors and a pretty strong motor. taking what I learned I cleaned out and fixed the front sensors on the old one and it started working again and I returned the horrible LM500.

well, the LM700 finally broke for good, sensor or motor, dunno, it won't return or go in reverse. so we "upgraded" to the LM900 which only seems to differ in that it has higher sides making it a little quieter. on inspection also noticed that the new one also only has sensors on one side. other than that "downgrade" the motor seems stronger and doesn't jam at the same full levels that either of the other two boxes did.

we're pleased so far, since it works better than the trusty LM700 did. we just hope it lasts as long.

Summary: If your cat is neurotic......
Comment: I was absolutely IN LOVE with the automatic litter box idea. Having 5 cats, I was looking for some help with cleaning. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I DO have 5 cats, there is no "good" interval for cleaning. The revolving door to the litter box room meant someone is always actively USING the litter box or WAITING for their turn. I joke, but inevitably one of my cats would enter the room just as the box would start cleaning. One day this happened to be my black cat, who is stereotypically a little skittish. The preposterously loud BUZZSAW volume of the cat box freaked him out to the point where he would not even enter the room NEXT TO the room where the litter box was.

Naturally, he still needed to use the restroom, so he made a point of telling me so, at 7am on my leg as I slept.....twice.

We got rid of the box but the damage was done and to this day, two months later, he still doesn't want to go into that room. We had to get another litter box and put it into the complete opposite end of the house.

The product seemed to be alright, except for two things: 1) the rake got filthy even though I only used the box a few days, 2) the volume and grating noise of the motor as it drags the rake across the litter.

If you have a cat that is a little skittish, this is not the product for you. If your cat is laid back, you'll probably get great success out of it.

Summary: 1/2 the scooping
Comment: I have owned a LitterMaid Litter Box for several years, until it finally broke down about a year ago. Well, the number of cats in my house doubled (from 2 to 4, with the addition of 2 kittens) ... I decided it was time for it again. The kittens took to it without a problem, and the other two were used to the old one, so they have no issues either. I keep it, and the other litter box in my spare bathroom, in the tub; so that scattered litter is easy to clean and sanitize. I am very tempted to get a second one, so that maybe I can get away without having to scoop for 3-4 days, instead of every other day as I do now. the cats use both boxes so I scoop the non-mechanical one, which gets old quick. My only issue with litter boxes now, is how do I keep them out of them while I'm trying to clean them?

Summary: LitterMaid LM900 Self Cleaning Catbox
Comment: We had to get it because we got the second cat--we really should have had it for just one, since it's so much cleaner. So far, it's been great with only a couple of drawbacks. That litter fill business can be tricky. If you overfill it, it will keep running back and forth, back and forth--perhaps all night long if you don't hear it. True. So you have to keep an eye for awhile after you put litter in to make sure you didn't put too much litter in. After a couple of months, I have to say I'm finally getting the hang of it. And the other unforseen drawback is that the waste container pretty much has to be emptied every single day or it starts to overflow. I might say that I wish it was at least twice as big, since this unit is supposed to be for multiple cats. Hard to go away for the weekend and ask a neighbor to deal with that. Overall, I think it's a great product, and it's definitely much better than having the stagnant litter box in here. I would definitely recommend this product.
