Like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson is one of the handful of artists that can release an album of their number one singles. Number Ones includes his solo chart toppers in the UK and abroad from the period beginning with his Off the Wall album right up to the new song "One More Chance", a collaboration with R Kelly. The remaining 17 songs on the album are all classics drawn from the disco-soul Off the Wall, the funky Thriller, the good Bad, the safe Dangerous, the semi-best-of History and the weak Invincible. Regardless of whether the bulk of Number Ones has appeared on other greatest hits albums, this is still an incredible selection of Michael Jackson's best music. --Georgina Collins

Summary: Great Collection but The Essential MJ is even better...
Comment: MJ's Number Ones Collection includes songs that hit #1 in the UK plus one additional track. While Number Ones is a great collection, The Essential Michael Jackson is much more complete. It includes all of MJ's #1 hits with the Jackson 5 (with the very notable exception of "I'll be There"), his early solo hits ("Ben," "Rockin' Robin," and "Gotta Be There," which all hit #1 or #2) as well as several other Jackson 5/Jacksons songs (e.g., "Shake your Body down to the Ground" and "Blame it on the Boogie"). The Essential MJ also includes ALL the top 10 charting tracks from Off the Wall (including She's Out of My Life and the title track), Thriller (including PYT, Gotta Be Startin' Something, Human Nature, and The Girl is Mine w/Paul McCartney), and Bad (including Just Another Part of Me) plus several other songs from later albums, like In the Closet, Will You Be There, and Heal the World. If you can find the 3-disc version of the Essential MJ (rather than the 2-disc version I have), you get several other songs, including Say Say Say with Paul McCartney, which was a huge #1 hit in the U.S. (I'm not sure why that song is not on Number Ones...). A friend of mine has the 3-disc version so I know it exists out there somewhere!!!
The ONLY songs that you DON'T get on the Essential MJ that you do get on Number Ones are the Earth Song (which was #1 in Europe but not in the U.S), Break of Dawn (also a hit in Europe but not the U.S.) and One More Chance. So when my old copy of Number Ones got scratched up, I purchased the Essential MJ and then downloaded a few songs (e.g., "I'll be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "Who's Lovin' You," "Dancing Machine," "Working Day and Night," "Scream," "The Earth Song" and "Say Say Say") onto a separate disk so I had all the best MJ songs on 3 discs (2 from the Essential MJ and one of my own creation...)
The Essential MJ also includes information regarding each song's performance on the U.S. pop, R&B, and (sometimes) rock and adult/contemporary charts.
Both collections are great-- after all, they are MJ songs-- but if you want a more complete collection I'd go with the Essential MJ. Or, at amazon prices, I'd get both.

Comment: Even in the 80's, when his rise to stardom was on it's way, I loved watching him dance. And now after all these years, the songs still make ya want to stand up and dance. Enjoy this video very much, and so does my grand kids.

Comment: I recently purchased the Number Ones by Michael Jackson. As soon as i received it in the mail by family and i were immediately dancing and singing to the tunes. It is simply fabulous and i am very happy that i purchased this one. I listened to the songs prior to buying it and there was one song in particular that i wanted to hear...."You are not alone" is one of my favorite hits from Michael Jackson. It makes me think about him when i play that song. You will not be disappointed with his album or any of them for that matter. He truly was the King of Pop!
