Customer Rating: Summary: Great Value...I didn't have the problems others had Comment: The glass container is worth $25 ... Its not that thin...solid...everything is solid...the water comes out a tiny bit warm and the whole container will be a bit warm but not that bad to concern me with leaching of any kind that is worrisome...It has taken me 20 years to buy one...Did not have to spend $550...As far as cleaning it I have used it four times in two days and it is not that scaled....I live in a small city...it had really nasty chemical looking liquid left at the bottom....like three tablespoons of yuck liquid...I let it just auto-shut off w hen done...it seems to know how much water you fill it with and just stops when done...recommends buying a surge protector in the letter from the company...some people wrote about digital timers to shut it off when near done to save the internal workings or w hat have you...Seem to auto shut off correctly really make s a nice fan white noise that is pleasant...but its a motor sitting on your counter-top...pretty cool like industrial appliance 560 watts is a good amount of use so I am worried about my electric bill....
Customer Rating: Summary: Love it!!!! Comment: We're very happy with this distiller. The design of the glass container is considerably better than other models we've had.
Customer Rating: Summary: Works great but design could be better Comment: Have had this distiller for a few months now. Makes good distilled water. What I don't like about it is the awkward design. To make water one has to unplug the lid-to-body electrical cord each time to put in the water then plug it back. There is a separate cord for the power outlet which fortunately is long enough. When placing the pitcher under the tiny outlet spout it has to be accurately placed right at the pitcher pouring spout, if you ever break the flimsy looking plastic outlet housing or drip spout you got a real problem. Also the lid on the pitcher could have been better designed. There is an inner ridge around the inside of the lid that makes aligning the lid important else water will dribble all over the place, only one alignment will work right, best to remove the lid when pouring. The pitcher holds quite a bit of water so handling it could be a problem for some people, not a problem for me. Entire unit including the pitcher has a fairly large footprint. I liked the Sear's distiller design much better, except the unit died after about 3 yrs and of course the dead component was the one part they did not sell. Here's a tip on cleaning out the hardwater crud at the bottom and side of the distiller tank: use a tablespoon or two of vinegar and also swirl it around/tip to get the stuff on the side then let it sit for an hour or more, then rise...much cheaper than the overpriced demineralizer solutions. It is a bit noisy and puts out heat so during the hot SCal summers I put it in the garage and cover it between use, in the winter it goes into a spare bedroom to heat the room.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great for small quantities Comment: This unit replaced a very poor unit I purchased on-line and had to pitch. It is wonderful in that it does what it claims: distills water. It is slightly noisy but it has to be. It has a fan that is continually on to cool the steam for distillation. To muffle the humming fan noise would increase the expense of the unit. I'd prefer a little noise to a more expensive unit. It also takes a full five hours to distill one gallon IF I preheat the initial water to 212 degrees on the stove and transfer the water over to the unit. Otherwise distillation is closer to six hours. Again, the unit is a little slower than others but the net kilowatts used is about the same - this unit runs on fewer kilowatts than the competition, hence it is a little slower. But if you only need one gallon/day, what difference does it make if the distiller takes 4 hours at a higher kilowatt level or 5-6 hours at a lower kilowatt level. You set it up, turn it on, and come back later to a gallon of distilled water. The time difference is not a deal breaker for me. And if I start the unit in the morning, I can easily get two gallons in one day.
I really like that the glass jar fits inside the unit. When I'm done distilling, everything packs inside so the footprint on the counter is clean and the glass jar is "safe" inside the unit. I also like that all the internal "secret" parts of the unit that come in contact with the water are stainless steel. This is a rare thing. Most units have plastic somewhere inside that the water travels through. HOWEVER...
What I don't like about the unit: the charcoal holder. It is plastic. By the time the water hits it, the water is cooler and hence less "reactive" with the plastic. That is some comfort. Also, the holder is very difficult to remove from the head unit to replace the charcoal. I also don't like that the holder is somewhat air-tight so it could harbor germs. Therefore, I like to visually inspect it every two weeks, and it is of some comfort that mold growth is less of an issue if you are distilling everyday. Even so, I would like to see a redesign of this part of the unit to address those issues.
But of all the units out there, and I considered buying $2000 units in my research, I am extremely content with this unit despite the plastic holder. It is great.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great little gizmo! Comment: This performs very well taking 5-6 hours to complete the cycle. Water is clear and good tasting. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the noise level of the fan is such that we run it either in a closed room or our patio. Would recommend product for anyone desiring pure, clean water. Debris left in container easily removed with a vinegar solution- try 2 cups of white vinegar with a full container of water and let sit a couple of hours. Hard or heavy deposits of calcium on the bottom can be removed with a cup of white vinegar and turn unit on for a couple of minutes.
