Summary: Great storage lofts! Installation tip.
Comment: I agree with all the positive things said about these shelves. I purchased 5 of them and they are great. I really appreciated the bag of extra hardware, as I had lost a few nuts during installation.
Forget the nails that come with the kit (used to initially attach the brackets to the joists.) I found it too difficult to to hammer a nail into a joist over my head. I used 2.5 inch sheet rock screws and they worked great. Just put on through the center hole and then use the 2 lag bolts that come with the kit. Also, if doing several units, make a template out of a piece of scrap material to get the measurement right between the front and rear brackets. I think the distance is about 45". I used a piece of plastic channel that hides wires. I cut it to the length of the support arms and drilled holes where they needed to be. Then I could use a screw (from the first tip) to hold the template to the ceiling while I located the joist for the second bracket. Mark the edges of the joist, then swing the template into position and drill the center hole for the bracket. Worked great.
The only problems I had that the end caps for the horizontal rods didn't fit snuggly in 3 out of the 5 kits. They were different designs between the ones that fit and didn't. Easily solved by a dab of silicon sealant.

Comment: I went into this looking for two things: 1, add extra storage to my home; and 2, be able to install by myself. The HyLoft 540 was the answer to both.
When I moved into my new townhome I quickly realized that my family and I had more stuff than space and adding storage to my garage seemed like an easy answer. My problem? I can barely hammer a nail to a wall (slight exaggeration, but nearly true). After more than a month of research I decided on the HyLoft system and I will never look back!
I purchased two sets to I could have a side-by-side system. When it arrived the directions were clear and to the point. ANYONE can understand them. In all, it took me about an hour start to finish to install them both. It was mentioned in a previous review that they can swing a bit. Yes, this is true. But it took me about 5 minutes more to install 2 L-brackets to secure them to the wall. No swinging anymore. Plus, each set came with materials to tie the separate pieces together to create a seamless overhead storage system.
The only con I have is that I was hoping to have a bit more height to store things. The packaging makes it seem like you can store two large containers stacked, but I just didn't find this possible. Maybe with two smaller storage tubs, but one is about all you'll get. Small complaint, I just re-packed a few tubs and everything fits.
If you're looking for a great, easy-to-install system that is incredibly versatile, look no further!

Summary: This is our 4th Hy Loft Unit
Comment: This is the 4th time we have purchased this product. It is that good. My husband has installed them in our garage. We use one for left over wood from home improvements, another for Christmas decorations,one for travel gear and the last for seasonal items. We will probably add more when we have a need. My husband says they install with a minimum of effort. He has replaced the screws that come with this unit with longer ones, however. Having the same units installed in the garage, give it a custom look. This is like having 4 additional closets in our home.
