Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

Customer Rating: Summary: Two Greats Together Comment: Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morriconi. Together. Life doesn't get any better than this. Yo-Yo Ma plays Morriconi's film title scores from The Mission, Cinema Paradiso, The Legend of 1900, Once Upon a Time in The West, Malena, Marco Polo, and others. 5 stars isn't enough.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Great Marriage of "Talents". Comment: This is a fabulous combination of two phenomenal talents and I loved it so much that I give it as gifts... and the receivers are immedate fans. I'll leave the technical jargon for those more gifted and eloquent writers and conclude by saying, it was wonderful!
Customer Rating: Summary: Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone Comment: The Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone CD is music that's so compelling I am moved to tears. The album was featured on my favorite public radio station as a gift enticement for people to contribute (more than I could afford to contribute). I found it on Amazon and was especially drawn to the tracks from The Mission - one of my favorite movies ever. Yo-Yo Ma's cello playing cannot be paralleled. The album is already one of my favorite CD's. It's on in the car almost all the time.
Customer Rating: Summary: Magnificent Comment: I'm no music expert, so I can't attest to anything technical, but can just simply say this is the most beautiful CD I've ever owned - or heard. I play this CD when I'm stressed and need to be reminded that there is beauty that transcends the mundane and the gloom that can sometime dominate daily existence.
Customer Rating: Summary: Two many defects in MP3 format Comment: I downloaded the whole Album in MP3 and found that the first two pieces are mixed and truncated improperly. As a matter of fact, the last 50 seconds of the first piece Gabriel's Oboe is actually the begining of the second piece The Falls. So The Fall has an abrupt start. In addition to these two pieces, #4, #9 and #15 also have sudden cut-offs in their endings. #18 and #19 are similar to #1 and #2. It seems to me they are divided into two pieces from a continues play. This is supposed to be a great album. But with so many defects in MP3, I don't think it is worth $9.99 to download. One thing I need to mention is Amazon customer service. Once I called them and described the problems, they immediately agreed to issue a full refund and claim that they will fixed the defects. By looking at the reviews, this issue has been there for a while. I hope it will be fixed soon.
