Summary: an ok weekly news amagzine
Comment: "The Economist" is an ok weekly magazine. It covers world politics and economy as well as some amount of technology (I wouldn't call that science, really) and culture. Luckily, it does not publish any celebrity news.

It gives an alright overview over what happened in the world, so I can recommend subscribing to it. However.....

-I do think that the quality of the articles is a bit weak. Especially when it comes to political topics, the number of articles that lack background information, a line of argument and a point is far too high. I often get the impression that the author doesn't quite know what he/she is talking about. I understand that "The Economist" is more focused on the economy side of things, however, it wouldn't hurt the magazine to hire some people that actually know something about politics.

-There is lack of critical analysis in the magazine. Especially when it comes to economy and business news, it would increase the quality of the articles if the authors would do a bit more of their own research and be more critical.

-I would like to read more different opinions on controversial topics. I am a big fan of the concept of publishing Pro/Con articles side by side as it gives a better understanding of different facets of the topic.

-I am also not a big fan of the fact that the authors name is not published, but that is a matter of taste. I have the feeling though that publishing the author names might help me avoiding the really bad articles.

Still, "The Economist" seems to be the best weekly news magazine published in US.

Summary: A great news magazine for superior overall long-term awareness
Comment: First, my mini-disclaimer. I am 25 year old with a short attention span (I'm starting to think I may have mild ADD and plan to chase that).

I really am interested in the news - not the trashy tabloid news or news with an agenda of it's own, but solid news that will make me a better person because I understand what is happening in the world (outside the U.S. as well as in). The Economist is packed with a lot of news that you simply won't find anywhere else. With everything that has gone down in the last year with the economic crisis, as well as the continuing turmoil in the Middle East, I wanted a reliable news source that I could depend on that would help me become more aware of current events. For me, The Economist is not easy to read through as the news and information is very detailed... but such details are necessary if you care to know the full picture. Some of the stories I do not care about, and I do skip. Many of the stories that are touched upon will be reviewed again later with updates and such, which is nice. If you don't have a good basis of what GDP means and other basic economic terms, I suggest you read a basic econ. book first, just so you will understand some of the articles a bit better - you will get more out them. Overall, if you read the Economist for a few months and dedicate the time it takes each week (it does take dedication from you), you will develop a much better understanding of the world. With so many people my age completely apathetic to the events at all levels - local, national and international, I like the idea that I can actually explain to a certain extent, why the economy is the way it is, why gas prices are going up or down, or what kind of an influence a specific decision by some politician may have on all of us. While a subscription to the magazine is pricey (I got the subscription off the Economist website), I feel it is worth every single penny.

Comment: My order of the Economist was renewal of a gift subscription, due to begin in January 2010. Your solicitation in late September 2009 assured me that the renewal would be treated as such, i.e. beginning in January 2010 when the original subscription expired. You can imagine my concern when I received a confirming e-mail from you, saying that the subscription would begin in 4 to 6 weeks! I immediately replied expressing my concern, but have never received a reply from Amazon. I'd now appreciate confirmation that the renewal gift subscription will be handled as you originally promised. R. F. Garland

Summary: One of the greatest magazines out there
Comment: The economist is one of the best magazines available today. The economist has been able to improve the quality of the magazine by charging subscribers more in order to cover the costs of sending journalists out to research, and report.

I read the magazine from cover to cover, and find the articles interesting, well researched, and backed up with extensive analysis and data. It took me a while to get adjusted to The Economist. This magazine includes comprehensive coverage into the economic and political events that impact this world. The economist features extensive coverage into events in Europe.

Pros
- Quality journalism
- Interesting Articles
- Data/Analytics
- Global Viewpoint

Cons
- Expensive
- Look elsewhere if you needs tips about stocks
- Coverage focuses on Europe

Comment: Great Magazine, but don't order from Amazon.

The third party vendor that Amazon outsources fulfillment to is totally incompetent and impossible to get in touch with. If you need to change your address you may as well forget about ever receiving another issue.

If Amazon cannot provide a better customer service experience it should get out of the magazine subscription business.
