Like many other manufacturers, Mag Instrument has expanded its line of flashlights to include models featuring LED-type bulbs. Why? LEDs are virtually unbreakable, and they are far more efficient than incandescent bulbs. As the product name suggests, this Maglite runs on 4 D-type batteries, which will take a while to run out thanks not only to the LEDs but also to Mag Instrument's Intelligent Energy Source Management, which balances high brightness against extended battery life. The bright, powerful beam adjusts from spot to flood simply by rotating the head. The case is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy that has been anodized inside and out, which gives you water- and shock-resistance in a lightweight package. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. In other words, this energy-efficient flashlight is almost indestructible-a good quality when it comes to the tools re rely on to help you find your way in the dark. Limited lifetime warranty. Batteries not included. --Josh Dettweiler

Customer Rating: Summary: Maglight 4D LED Flashlight Comment: To say I'm disappointed is an understatement! I have many LED flashlights, from many differant makers. All of them are better than the Maglight, even there own AA version. As the second reviewer stated, there is a huge black hole in the beem, with exception of the tightest setting on the focus! I am going to try and send it back, but since it was bubble packed, and I opened it and put batteries in to check it out, I don't know if I will be able to? I should have paid more attention to the reviews, as the second one I read stated this very thing! Live, be stupid, and learn. I can't even say I didn't know, because I read the reviews. I decided to try it because almost all the other reviews never mentioned it. I guess it must not have mattered the majority of those buyers? But it certainly does to me!
Customer Rating: Summary: A flaw... Comment: This light was very bright, the brightest of any flashlight I have ever had. If the dogs were barking in the middle of the night, this maglite made it easy to see what they were barking at. After a couple of years the light started getting dimmer (I didn't use it that much). I got my new batteries out to replace them but the old batteries were stuck. I guess they had swollen and burst. They were Engerizer D batteries.
Apparently this it not an uncommon problem and Maglite will replace the flashlight when this happens but only if the batteries are Duracell, Eveready or Ray-O-Vac so I am out of luck.
Be sure to only use those brands.
Customer Rating: Summary: The archetypical utilitarian flashlight... with a few pluses Comment: I don't care to have flashlights with a bunch of bells and whistles, and this is the kind of flashlight that meets my criteria.
Pros:
Clicky, recessed side mounted switch, it's either on or off... no blinking, spinning, whizzing, flashing, or dimming modes.
Simple "twist to focus" head (which frankly I wouldn't care if it didn't have)
Hefty
LED based (my *favorite* kind of flashlight)
Bright but not blinding (if you are behind it... looking into it is a different story)
Cons:
None that I can see
Other observations:
If you focus it to its tightest beam, the beam is very much like what you would expect from a conventional incandescent bulb. However, if you twist it away from there, it quickly develops a dark disk in the center with a bright halo. I struggle to understand why one would want this, but it doesn't really matter since I just leave it focused as tightly as it can be and it suits me fine.
It's big, but that's partly why I bought it. You'll NEVER lose this down the couch or car seat.
Just a nice, solid, large flashlight.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Best Only Gets Better With MagLite Comment: I purchased my first MagLite flashlight well over 20 years ago. I was so impressed with the quality, I purchased a number of them in different sizes from keychain AAA to 4-D cell. Not surprisingly, I still have them all and most of them still look much the same as they did when purchased. Only one of them has ever been a problem - after a family member left it turned on and in a drawer for over a year. The batteries literally swelled and froze into the aluminum, pitting and eating into it to become a part of it. The rest of the flashlight still looked new. I had to take a large bit and drill the two C batteries out of that one. It took some time to clean it so new batteries would work it again, but it's been back in service now for ten years. I've even seen one of the 4-D cell models run over by numerous 18-wheel trucks with loads just over 80,000 lbs. A friend spotted that one, saw it still worked, and placed it in his truck for his own use. The anodized black finish was worn off, but that flashlight served him for over fifteen years until he passed away. I'm sure one of his family members is still using it.
My original 4-D flashlight quickly became a favorite of mine for shooting raccoons and possums out of the trees on my property during their nightly raids to my chicken coop. The only drawback was the bulb would blow if the flashlght was dropped, and the bulbs only lasted for about five hours use before needing replacement. That meant bulb replacement was about every year or two. Batteries lasted about six months to a year in my use before they needed replacing. Many years ago, I switched from the standard bulb to the Xenon and realized some increased battery life and a stronger beam - even slightly improved bulb life. So, when it was time again for a new bulb, I noticed the LED 3 Watt module offered the brightness of a Halogen bulb and DOUBLES battery life. I also had read LEDs were not subject to blow if the flashlite is dropped, and they have a lifespan far into the thousands of hours.
Since I wanted a second large flashlight and the improved LED performance. I purchased the MagLite 3 Watt LED module and this new MagLite ST4D016. For the differences I found in Halogen brightness, and beam performance compared to the MagLIte LED, read [Amazon review] "Xenon or LED? Here's Your Answer In How They Stack Up Against Each Other". After using this flashlight going on two months, I can safely now say the light remains stronger than a Xenon Halogen after hours of use - and as bright as if the batteries were still brand new. The MagLite ST4D016 4-D LED flashlight is definitely a "keeper" that will please anyone.
*Note* My new ST4D016 also contained the same bulb module I purchased for my older MagLite.
Customer Rating: Summary: It works good, like a flashlight should Comment: What more can I say. It's bright, it's red and it has an on/off button. It works just fine for me and my needs. I would recommend this to anyone. It was cheap and works better than most flashlights 3 or 4 times the cost.
