Editorial Reviews:

CELOXTM is the newest generation of emergency hemostatic agents. Simpler to use and safer than older technologies, CELOX granules quickly control even severe arterial bleeding. Just pour it in, pack it, and apply pressure. No specific training is required. CELOX is not exothermic and won't burn the victim or caregiver. And CELOX works in hypothermic conditions and clots Heparinized blood. CELOX is safe to use for the entire body including head, neck and chest wounds. Most importantly, CELOX can be used instantly and without hesitation as a fast, safe and simple emergency treatment for serious bleeding. Average Time to Clot Whole Blood: 30.5 Seconds Average Time to Clot Heparinized Blood: 48 Seconds Controls Major Arterial Bleeding CELOXs unusual properties have been confirmed in wound models, where they have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to rapidly control major arterial bleeding (without cautery) from traumatic wounds. The granular presentation provides a simple, quick way to control bleeding and is particularly useful in treating difficult and deep wounds. A clot forms within minutes after pouring the product into the wound. Excess granules form a gelled mass (see Fig. 2) to protect the clot. The gelled material is easy to remove. No Heat Generated CELOX does not generate any heat, produce burning, nor does it embed itself into the wound. Works in Hypothermic Conditions CELOX works whether blood temperature is 98.7°F (37.05°C) or 65.4 F (18.5 °C). Lightweight, Portable, Easy to Administer CELOX granules are lightweight, packaged in sterilized, sealed packets which are easy and fast to open. CELOX is poured into the wound and held down with gauze for 5 minutes. A compression bandage is then wrapped over the gauze covered wound and patient is transported. Long shelf life.

Summary: Celox
Comment: I bought this to add to our cabins first aid kit. I saw an ugly chain saw accident years ago, and I feel better knowing we have this.

Summary: KNOW THE AMOUNT YOU ARE BUYING
Comment: Two sizes of CELOX are pictured in this offer. It suggests that both the 1.25 ounces (35g) and the 0.5 ounces (15g) packets are included in this price. This is not the case. I contacted Ben at BP Medical Supplies. This offer at $13.90 + $5.23 shipping is for the 0.5 ounce (15g) packet only. This is not made clear anywhere on the product page. The following is a direct copy from Product Details:

Product Details
Product Dimensions: 5 x 0.2 x 4 inches ; 5 ounces

THIS IS INCORRECT!

The actual contents weight of this product offer is 0.5 ounces.

CELOX does work. It might even save your life. However, the exact quantity that we the customers are buying needs to be made perfectly clear up front.

ADDENDUM: 10-24-09

At the current price of $14.25 + $4.51 shipping for 15g. COST: $1.25 per gram.
I opted for the larger 35g package for $21.50 + $4.51 shipping. COST $.76 per gram.
In a very low humidity room, I divided one 35g package into smaller zip-lock plastic pouches like jewelers use. As long as the package remains tightly sealed, it will last until needed. This is a wonderful product, but why pay more than we have to?

Summary: Avoid ER
Comment: I puchased a 15 gram packet of Celox sometime last December 2008. I bought Celox with the hope that it would prevent me from having to endure a time-consuming and expensive trip to the ER the next time I cut myself doing something stupid (like using a dull chisel).

I'm happy to report that Celox quickly stanched the bleeding and saved me a trip to the ER when I (surprise) cut into an artery or vein at the base (palm-side) of my thumb with a freshly-sharpened 3/8" chisel. (I'm pretty sure it was my radial dorsal artery.)

The bleeding was pretty severe, and I was frusterated because I didn't want to saddle my wife with feeding and bathing the kids by herself while I sat in an ER waiting to get stitches.

That's when I remembered the Celox! I cleaned the cut with soap and water, ripped open the packet of Celox with my teeth and poured in inside the inch-long cut. The heavy bleeding clotted up within about one minute. It healed beautifully within a week.

(Note, in fairness, the following complaint should really be directed at our government, and a ludicrous legal system that prevents the manufacturer from supplying real-life instructions out of liability concerns.) I do have one complaint. The Celox instructions were deliberately sparse. (I say, 'deliberately', because I failed to find detailed instructions anywhere on the web, Celox homepage, etc.) The end-user deserves/requires detailed instructions on how to care for a wound after it is treated with the Celox product. For example, how long should we wait before removing the protective Celox scab that covers (and protects?)the treated wound? Instucting the user simply to "seek medical help" is neither sufficient nor practical. It prompts several concerns such as these:

What if medical care isn't immediately available becaue the user is hiking the Appalachian trail with Governor Sanford?

How can we assume that the doctor will know what to do? For instance, if the user seeks medical help, should the treating physician always reclean the wound and remove the Celox scab? Even if the wound doesn't look to be infected?

Overall: Highly recommend. I bought a few more packets for my first aid kit.

See the attached academy of emergency medicine research for evidence of the product's effectiveness compared to gauze: [...]
