Summary: Pretty good performance, makes a critical difference, delivers value
Comment: Overall, I'm pleased with the zBoost YX300 zPersonal Cell Phone Signal Booster unit, which I purchased to help with signal strength in my home office. It makes a definite difference. Not huge, but big enough to meet my needs, and well worth the price.

I work out of my home office, and use my cell phone (currently a Palm Centro on Verizon) at my desk regularly. Standing out on my sidewalk, I get three bars. In most of my house, I get 2 bars. For whatever reason, sitting at my desk I would occasionally get two bars, but usually only one and sometimes none. After adding the zBoost, I always get two bars at my desk, which is a critical difference. I had hoped that I would get 4 bars at my desk, but that didn't materialize. But I'll settle for always having at least two bars, because now my calls don't drop and my voice quality is good.

I found the setup pretty straightforward, with the exception of the suction cups on the antenna end not sticking very well, even to a slick surface. I solved that problem with an adhesive cable tie base, attaching the antenna to it with a couple of plastic cable ties. Fortunately, the suction cups on the base unit stick to the glass just great.

It is crucial to observe the distances specified in the instructions, which are pretty scanty, on the back of the box. My base unit is stuck to the window at approximately the same height as the antenna (about five feet up), and the two are ten feet apart, give or take a couple of inches, and have a clear line of sight between them. I sit midway between the two, i.e., five feet from each. Both base and antenna are vertically oriented, if that makes any difference. The idiot light on the base is always green.

It is also crucial to connect the antenna cable to the base first, and only then plug in the power. The light will be red, and stay that way for ten or fifteen minutes while the unit acquires signal towers, etc. Once it turns green, you can accurately guage the results.

So, just three stars, because I had hoped for more bars, but the ones I got have made a critical difference to me. I would recommend this device to anyone with similar needs - just keep your expectations modest.

Summary: Booster
Comment: works just like it says. I work in a bomb resistant building and can only get a sliver of a signal. Now I get 2-3 bars.

Summary: Works... As a last resort.
Comment: It works if your phone stay really close and might work best if you use a handsfree device and place the phone right next to the antenna. It boosted the signal to from basically nil to 4 bars EV and 1 to 2 bars 1X and my wife gets full bars GSM.

There is a high powered version that requires attic and/or outside mounting and extensive cabling which I also have in my other home which also works well.

If you have no other choice, this is you choice. Please do not buy any of those passive antennas and boosters.

Summary: Inexpensive solution that works for me
Comment: I bought this because after having a metal roof installed, my cell phone reception was awful. I had to practically hang my head out of a window to talk longer than 1 minute. After doing some serious research, I decided this was the most inexpensive solution that didn't require a physical connection to my cell phone.

There are 2 pieces - a larger unit that is placed in a window and attached to the glass via 2 suction cups and a plastic antenna that connects to the unit via a long cord and also has 2 suction cups on the back. The window unit is powered by the included power supply, so you need to place it in a window that has an electrical outlet nearby.

The only instructions are on the back of the box - just 3 steps. Personally, I would have appreciated a little more in the way of set-up and troubleshooting instructions, hence my 4 star rating.

Be ready to spend some time figuring out the best location for the unit and the antenna. A lot depends upon where the nearest tower is and what kind of obstructions are between you and it. I put mine in a couple of different windows before I hit on the one with the best reception. Then, you need to place the antenna at least 10 feet from the window where the amplifier is. That entails figuring out how to run the long antenna cable so that it isn't in the way. Right now, I have the antenna attached to the glass on some artwork but I will probably glue or tack the suction cups to the wall when I am sure I like where it's located.

The unit in the window has an LED that glows green or red. If you place the antenna too close to the amplifier, it flashes red to indicate it's not working. When you move the antenna, you will need to unplug the amplifier and then plug it back in so it will reset itself and tell you if the amplifier is far enough away.

Lastly, you must be within 6 feet of the antenna for it to work properly. That in itself requires careful thought as to the placement of everything. You want it to be in an area you are comfortable taking all of your calls from.

That's it. When you get everything set up, it will work to amplify whatever signal you normally get. (Note - if you had no signal before, this will not give you a signal. It only amplifies what signal you already have.) I noticed immediate improvement. My calls don't have a lot of drop outs now and the call doesn't drop after a minute or two. The call quality is very good, also. Of course, I must stay within 6 feet of the antenna, but for $60, I can live with that.

Summary: Doesn't do much for me
Comment: I can't really knock the product because it's advertised to take an outside cell phone signal and extend it inside your house. Well I have really crappy cell phone reception outside myself and this device did it's job and brought that crappy reception inside. Really has provided no benefit to me whatsoever so it was a complete waste of money in my case.
