Customer Rating: Summary: Print Quality - Thumbs down Comment: No matter how often I change the expensive toner cartridges, or how many times I've opened up the thing to clean it, toner spots just don't go away from the finished prints.
Beyond that the color is dull, no life. The printer is very heavy. The duplex works well. The wireless feature works well. I like the fact that it can be connected via parallel and/or USB if you want to run wires for quicker printing. Replacing toner is real simple, but when it's time to buy the six toner cartridges, you'll spend more on them then the cost of the printer. Better to just buy another printer because it comes with all the cartriges.
When printing envelopes, it wrinkles the corners.
Thumbs down.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Printer Comment: I bought this printer to replace two other color laser printers I had. Compared to my Okidata C5150 and Dell 5100CN, this printer is faster, easier to use and has better print quality.
Works well with Apple Snow Leopard 10.6.
Customer Rating: Summary: Couldn't be happier! Comment: I couldn't be happier with this printer. The combination of being wireless and offering duplex is fantastic. Its size is reasonable for the features. It goes into hibernate mode when not in use and warms up when a print command is sent so is quiet when not in use and you never have to turn it on and off. The ability to share the printer and print from anywhere in the house is great. Set up was a little challenging for me, but with some help from someone who knew what they were doing, it seemed a simple process. Probably all networked printers could be challenging if networks aren't your thing. Probably not unique to this model. It's important to note I'm a single residential user, never really put it to the test of multiple simultaneous users. Print quality is great for color presentations, etc. Have not tried photo printing yet.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great home office printer Comment: First, let me say that I have some experience with Brother laser printers. I am a Technology Resource Teacher at my school and have a classroom. Printing quite a bit and a fair amount in color and duplex I prefer to not make the journey to our common networked HPs, which cost >1K and don't do duplex either. In my room I have a Canon MFC for scanning and copying and a Brother HL-4040 for color and duplex printing. I also have had an HP Color LaserJet 2605DN in my home office, along with an HP OfficeJet 7410xi and an Epson 3800 for photo printing. My wife has my previous Brother HL-5280 Yes, I'm a geek and print a lot.
Out of the box, the setup was even easier than the 4040. Less tape to pull. Took about 15 minutes to unbox, remove tape, and lode toner. Setup was straightforward for my wireless network with a D-Link DIR 655 router. One caveat that I will add is that unlike the 5280, I had to use the setup on the control panel. With the 5280 I was able to use the DVD, connect via Ethernet, and the software found my Dlink network. With the 4070CDW, I got a window saying that more than one network was found (probably my neightbor), and to choose one. None were in the list. It's trivially easy to use the control panel to set it up using SecureEasySetup from the control panel (page 46 of the user guide). Both my and my wife's Macs see it and print reliably, hers on an iMac running 10.5.7 and my Mac Pro running 10.6.1
Pros:
* Compared to the monochrome Brother models, it's not quite as fast, but even for someone who's a little impatient, plenty fast enough, including duplex mode.
* Having a control panel is a big deal for me. Recently Brother seems to have moved away from this in some of their other printers, and I find it very useful. Being able to tilt it towards me, as it's sitting at chin level, is great.
* The multipurpose tray. I'm comparing here to the HP 2605, the tray of which was a single paper feed at the bottom of the printer with no fold down tray. For envelopes, card stock, business card printing, it would be a little off center each time. Small note - the envelope still feeds down as in the mono models, but the fold goes to the left, not the right.
* I don't know the toner yield yet, but have found high-yield compatible cartridges around $[...]. Unlike some comments I have read, you can print just black if a color runs out using the Mono setting in the print dialog.
* Color - I have read negative remarks about the color. I use this for printing a lot of color spreadsheets and graphs and find it to be extremely accurate. This is not and never should be a photo printer. Get a good Epson or Canon for that.
* Speed - As above slightly slower than their monochromes but plenty fast enough.
* One other puzzling, but positive aspect. With the 4040 plugged into the same wall outlet and supposedly the same power draw, I don't get the occasional warning from my UPS power supply unit that it's drawing on the battery. Interesting and nice. One less button to click.
* It's a con for some, but the paper curling is minimal, at least compared to the monochrome Brother printers. I have more of a problem using the cheapest paper my school buys for the copy machine and instead buy higher-quality paper by the 10 ream box from CostCo. It isn't an issue for me
Con:
* Minor quibble. The door on the multipurpose tray is a little tight, as one hole isn't exactly aligned with the post to secure it. No big deal, just takes a tiny bit more force.
* Envelopes. Yes, they come out with a small crease. I guess if you're using this in a business setting for lots of envelopes it might be an issue. For the few I print it isn't and the folding is pretty minor.
Customer Rating: Summary: The customer service was terrible. Worst in my whole life. Comment: Let me start by saying if I can give 0 stars or negative stars, I would.
The printer had problem of inks leaking (created smears everytime we print in color). We were suggested by C.S. to replace toners, which we did, but that did not solve the problem. When we tried to get C.S. to help us to either fix or replace the printer, they kept giving us crappy response to try to delay the process (obviously they did NOT want to do anything to fix the problem themselves). Eventually, after tens of phone calls, we got them to replace the printer - HOWEVER, they had the SAME problem again. Addition to that, now the printer jams with duplex printing.
Luckily we have purchased through a store and we bought extended replacement warranty, the store refunded us after Brother's 1yr warranty expired (they could not do anything until then).
Seem like most people are enjoying the printer, which I am happy to hear, but I will never purchase anything from this company - because C.S. was terrible. They refuse to service the printer (even though it was still under their warranty), they gave us so hard time. I seriously never had that bad C.S. before in my entire life.
Now that we got refund from great 'extended warranty' from a store we purchased the printer (it's not Brother's warranty), I am out there again, looking for purchasing a new printer. Hope I can find something good that is not made by Brother.
