For peace of mind on the go, n?vi 255 leads the way with voice-prompted turn-by-turn and optional MSN Direct to get you there on time and keep you informed. It's packed with millions of destinations and maps for North America or Europe. Like the rest of the compact n?vi 2x5-series, this portable navigator is priced right and ultra-easy to use.n?vi 255 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and n?vi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and and smooth map updates as you navigate. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. In addition, n?vi 255 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. Customer Rating: Summary: Nuvi troubles Comment: I purchase a nuvi for my trip to Europe in July of 2009. The unit functioned for a total of 2 days before dying on me.
Here I am having spent $400 for the nuvi, in a foreign country traveling with a dead GPS unit. I guess paper maps still have a purpose.
At the time I received the unit I also purchased A city map of Athens.
To garmin's credit they replaced the unit in September when I returned. Though it did little to ease my pain.
Now the icing on the cake. A month after I received a functioning unit I was advised that garmin issued a map update for the city navigator map. This update I have to purchase all over again since Garmin does not provide for free updates on this product.
It would seem to me that in a difficult environment for the hand held GPS manufacturers that they would do everything possible to keep customers happy. Not Garmin. They seem to think that we will just take what they hand out without consequences. They are wrong.
If you want a sporadically functioning unit and poor customer service then Garmin is for you.
Customer Rating: Summary: I like it Comment: This is my second Garmin unit. I especially like Garmin units because they are compatible with MapSource. MapSource is free PC software that allows you to do all kinds of mapping things and upload to the Garmin unit. MapSource also makes it easy to update your unit's map annually.
Customer Rating: Summary: perfect Comment: I love this gps. This is my 2nd gps. My first one was five years old and very large. Best feature text to speech. So much easier to hear street names. And the size is perfect
Customer Rating: Summary: It is more than enough with this money. Comment: I bilieve everyone would enjoy this product with much lower price than other new models, but you must update it free of charge within a limited period offered by Garmin.
Customer Rating: Summary: All around good value Comment: Haven't used our Nuvi 255W all that much yet but so far it has worked well for us. Took a while to learn all of the navigating tricks using screen touches, found some items we didn't think we had until my wife found them by accident in the idle time of a long drive with nothing else to do. Basically you have to play with it to learn it. A good value I believe for the money. There are fancier units out there but for the buck this one works very well. Even thinking on locking in spots on the lakes when fishing next summer. Simply click on the "Where am I" icon which will give you the GPS co-ordinates and then click "add to my favorites". Title the favorite and your set. Keep in mind 1 latitudinal or longitudGarmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigatorinal second equals approx. 90 feet but it will put you closer than eyeballing it on a big lake and quicker also. Just don't drop it in the water.
