Summary: Kindle for Textbooks? The future of books
Comment: The Kindle concept is wonderful. You can fit 1,000s of books with very little hard drive space. However, as someone who leads an academic life, I am looking for some upgrades. I want a Kindle that has a screen as high and wide as a small open paperback. Seeing only one page as a time is tough. When reading through academic textbooks, sometimes you need to refer back and forth between a few paragraphs to understand what is being said.
The future of paperbacks? You bet. But before that happens, the price of the books need to come down. Why buy an electronic version for the same price as the paper? I'd be willing to see some ads, like a magazine, if they would really drop the price.

Summary: What an awesome reader!
Comment: I bought this for my wife's Birthday 3 months ago. I could not have made a better choice. She is a VERY big reader and can not put this this down. I also have loaded a couple of cook books and use it myself. I wanted the big screen and the extra cost was well worth it. I just can't say enough good things about it. She reads so fast, I wonder what the credit card bill looks like, lol. Barns and Noble will be hurting now that she does need them anymore.
I have looked at the Sony, and it does not hold a candle to this one. Great product, I am her Hero!

Summary: Not for heavy PDF viewing
Comment: There are a lot of good things to say about the Kindle DX, and I won't rehash what's good about it -- the rest of the reviews do a fine job of describing the things Amazon does right with the device.
I want to focus specifically on the PDF support (or lack thereof) in the DX. As a computer professional, I spend a good portion of my time reading reference books. Many of these reference books are available in PDF form, and I like having a reference library of PDF files on my laptop. When the DX was released with PDF support, I bought one, hoping to be able to carry that reference library around with me. Sadly, this wasn't the case.
As is mentioned in other reviews, the DX does not support annotation of PDFs, bookmarking with context, Table of Contents, and the search function not sufficiently flexible for searching a large book. I find using technical books on the Kindle DX to be essentially an exercise in frustration.
I appreciate its utility as a device for reading kindle formatted books, and the device is still useful to me in that capacity, but I felt I had to warn other buyers that if they were buying the device predominantly as a PDF reader they will likely be disappointed.

Summary: Love my Kindle
Comment: My husband bought me this Kindle for my birthday, since I love to read. I used to read about a book a week, sometimes more. Now I read even more. It's convenient, very portable,even in the car using text to speech(tho the voice isn't very good, not human enough), you can sample books before you buy, plus lotsd of books for free. All in all I love it. You do forget its not a book. One thing you guys might want to work on is a way to lock it, so if it's stolen no one can get to your credit card thru eclick before you call it in as stolen.

Comment: After 6 months I have zero complaints with my DX. I am simply "me-tooing" those giving five stars: for me the complaints of those giving fewer stars are not justified in my experience. As with any product I wish it cost less, but I'm not disappointed by the functionality/cost ratio of the DX. I will admit that the DX is heavier than you might guess, so one handed operation, can get tiresome after an hour or so. (I am often running it in my left hand with my right hand free to pet the cat on my lap. For cat lovers I will confirm that it is easier to read and pet with a kindle than it is with a hardcopy book.)
