It starts right up and is super quiet with 1 exception, it gurgles a bit. I am easily able to sleep through it though. The only other downside, it does not shoot the vapor too high into the air, so you want to elevate it. A great buy though. I find the mid range to be fine for our cathedral ceiling 20x20 room. The variability of the output is from nearly nothing to a cloud about 3 feet above the top of the cone, very nice for when you need just a bit of humidity. The tank has a good handle on top but when it's upside down for filling it is a bit slippery so be careful filling. Compared to my kaz personal mist, this puts out a bit more but it is so quiet. I'm moving this to the bedroom and getting another one. I'll keep the kaz in the office. It holds about 1 gallon which is a nice volume to carry and on the low side of mid point on the uncalibrated dial that seems like it might be a once a day fill up
