Customer Rating: Summary: O!Play versus WDTV Debate Comment: [I actually wrote this review for the O!Play, but thought I'd cut and paste here as well, in case it was of benefit to those considering this choice. It's my opinion only, based on my experience (not a rep for anyone). Good luck in your Media Player shopping!]
My opinion: Go O!Play all the way.
My first media player purchase was a WDTV player (first generation, not the 'Live' version). It was okay, pretty good even. However, it had a audio sync problem of about 0.2 seconds (audio lagged image). It didn't matter for my kids cartoons, but in live action, it was a bit sub-par. Some ISOs wouldn't play. The chapters in regular DVDs didn't work, never mind for Blu-Rays. Speaking of Blu-Rays, it pretty much couldn't handle them, stuttered every 5 minutes. On Blu-Ray there was no subtitle support, you had to create (remux) the movie with them always on, or always off. I kept reading the customer reviews here and with about 3 days left to my 30-day return window, sent the WDTV player back and decided to give the O!Play a shot.
BOY AM I EVER GLAD I DID!
Right out of the box, the O!Play is better made piece of equipment. The WDTV seems a little toylike by comparison. For example, the power supply comes with velcro ties - obviously this isn't a big deal in and of itself, but it speaks to the attention to detail and the care for the product that ASUS has. Updating to current firmware took 5 minutes. I plugged the in same USB external drive, same cable, and WOW, what a difference. The image is better (I have a 1080p plasma run through HDMI), regular DVDs upscale great (this is true of WDTV too though), there is no audio sync lag, the same ISOs that wouldn't play on WDTV played flawlessly, the Blu-Rays played without a stutter, everything has chapter support and a dedicated subtitle button on the remote. Speaking of the remote, it has a volume control, so no second remote is needed when parked on the couch. Some reviews complained of the O!Play's GUI, and the preview of movies, but my family likes this interface better ... the WDTV had thumbnails, but they were too hard to read and see, and O!Play's is crystal clear with their titling.
Other things the O!Play excels at; there is networking. I don't use it, but nice to know I have the option if I choose to go that way. One reviewer said that the O!Play would accept a USB hub, which I read the WDTV would not - if both of those are true, this is an obvious advantage. Believe it or not, I can fill 4TB of movies pretty quickly, especially with Blu-Rays coming in at 40GB each. BTW, one reviewer said that the SATA connection on the O!Play won't take a USB plug, but they were mistaken, I plugged mine in with no problem.
The O!Play, in my opinion, is not a product still waiting to come into its own, but a real Media Player that you can change all you movies to ... no more scratched DVDs, no more bookshelf space taken up with rows and rows of movies and music, no more fan noise! I love my O!Play - BFF.
Customer Rating: Summary: Surprised at how well it works! Comment: I know that's a surprising thing to say in today's "defective by design" marketplace! I use it to play MKV and AVI files off a standalone hard drive onto a non-hd tv. Really, you just plug everything in, change your TV to the appropriate Input setting and start watching your movies! The menu capability was the only thing keeping me from giving this product 5-Stars, but from reading other reviews, there seems to be firmware upgrades for the device I can apply to improve that. There also seems to be a newer model out, but if you can live with the device being standalone, I would recommend this product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Perfect for my needs. Comment: This little media player was just what I needed for my collection of music, photos and digital videos that I store on a 1Tb USB drive. It plays most popular formats (I say most because once in a blue moon you will stumble upon a format that it can't play). WD claims they will constantly push out firmware updates to make this player compatible with new formats and improve functionality but you have to be a bit skeptical on this. This device has been out for 2 years and there have been only 2 firmware updates and it was mostly bug fixes. Meanwhile WD released new versions of this device forcing you to go and buy a new device if you want new functionality.
It definitely does not have all the features of the expensive full blown media centers, but if you just need to be able to play music on your home theater and show photos and videos on your TV you really can't get a better value out there.
Over all a great product for my needs. I highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: rating Comment: some AVI,WMV some wont let me play them,WMV I tryed so many times & still wont play. it states on the box that it plays wmv9 but is that not the same as plain WMV. when I tryed to play H264 it skiped, X264 noise skips.ok its not transforming the picture bigger. its driving me crazy.because you can see the degrading picture for some reason it dose not smooth the picture out. & it should not be doing this, over the long run you will run into some issues. I have every couple of minutes, bad picture quality. 700mb avi movie was terrible picture . can see big pixel square boxes. Im using a 32 inch flat screen tv . 700 mb might be to small for flat screen tv. or the box is crappy. because the AVI is a smaller file & the tv stretched it out. might be ok with the old box tv maybe. terrible picture quality. tryed 1500 gb avi and the picture seemed better more of the time. emailed me your comment if you have any ideas to why my picture is terrible & what should I do about it to have better picture quality ( elliot 2698 at yahoo . com )& when is a new update going to come out so even more containers will play with no issues. AVI can some in many contains.the best Picture quality it really liked was mpeg2 but when I convert dvd the best is 7gb and the lower scale is 2gb witch is good but you cant get the very finest GB really small. H264 takes 5 hours to convert witch its a waste of time..
Customer Rating: Summary: Good price Comment: It's a good product compare to the price that I paid for. Few problems like the remote is extremely slow which is really annoying. Take a long time to read the content of the USB drive, specially if you've a high capacity one. Some of the files need to go through their converter software even they worked fine with PC.
