Customer Rating: Summary: A terrific magazine if you have older kids! Comment: I just bought a copy of this Parenting School Years magazine and decided to get sign up. I used to subscribe to Parenting when my kids were little but then stopped when we were out of the diaper stages. I never saw anything out there that talked about the stuff you need to know as they get older. They have some excellent articles that cover many of the "tween" issues from eating disorders to cliques. I've been clipping some recipes too, and my daughter likes to look at the fashions for her.
Customer Rating: Summary: A magzine for those of us who are past the newborn worries Comment: As any mother knows, there are so many worries that can go along with those first few months and years. And, there's a plethora of magazines aimed at that segment.
Now there's one targeting those of us who know that just because a child can speak up, feed/bathe/dress themselves, and growth percentiles are no longer the critical measure - there ARE still worries and struggles! Balancing freedom/discipline, homework, technology, friendships, communication, etc. Are there ads and reviews of material 'stuff'? Yes - and I don't mind that! I like to read about what's out there for this age group (K - 6th or so?), as it helps me to make decisions about what we might be interested in and what we're not. If you grow all your own food, only eat whole foods, sew your own clothes, and never interact with the 'outside' material world - this may not be for you. Since I do buy foods (prepared even, gasp), buy clothes, gadgets, music, etc - this is fine by me.
I'll agree with another reviewer that it's not written at the level of, say, The Atlantic. But, I'm not looking to it to speak to the intellectual in me, but rather the mom of an elementary schooler, and it does that quite well in my opinion.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not bad Comment: I used to read Parenting when my children were babies and figured I would give their new magazine a try after seeing the promotion. I didn't have huge expectations, was just expecting a quick read with some articles geared towards school age issues. That is pretty much what I got. Not that many articles have really stood out so far except one in the most recent issue on education and testing that I found interesting enough to save for a friend. Overall its ok and one of the few parenting magazines not about babies or toddlers. My biggest complaint is I received the first two issues back to back and one was for the month that had passed, the other for a month about to pass. I would have preferred receiving new issues instead of back issues.
Customer Rating: Summary: FINALLY a mag for moms w/older kids! Comment: After my two kids grew out of babyhood, I was sad to find that regular Parenting wasn't that helpful or relevant to my life anymore. I'm SO glad that they decided to start a new school years publication! The articles are timely, inspired, and FUN to read. Whoever is running this thing has a great voice and sense of humor. Looking forward to future issues!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Magazine for Moms with school aged kids! Comment: I had seen the old Parenting magazine, but the other day I picked up my sister-in-law's old copy of Parenting School Years (I'm all about recyclables, what can I say?), and LOVED it. It is a family focused magazine full of great ideas for fun ways to connect with your kids. It is mom-focused, but that's the point, I think. Even moms deserve a helping hand! My favorite article was "6 Friends Every Mom Needs." It is so important to take care of yourself in addition to taking care of your children, and Parenting really gets that.
Something else to consider is [...]--it's a great tool, their child health guide is priceless. When my kids don't feel well, it's the first thing I check (after calling my mom, the nurse). I recommend this magazine 100%!
