Editorial Reviews:

J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star knives were designed and developed in close cooperation with renowned professional chefs. Introduced in 1976, today Four Star is the world's most sought after up-scale knife series. This 8 piece block set includes the following: 2 3/4-inch peeler, 3- inch parer, 5 inch serrated utility, 7-inch hollow edge santoku, 8-inch Chef's, 9 inch steel, kitchen shears, and wood storage block. The Four Star knives are fully forged, ice hardened blades with a classic molded handle for comfort and balance.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good knife set but will you really use the set? Comment: This is a good knife set and quality metal blades. But the question is do you really need the set? We do mostly asian cooking and we have found that you can use the santokou to do just about everything. Also, the santoku seems redundant with the chef knife. The scissors are handy but the others smaller knives and the chef's knife we just haven't found real use for. Please note that even though this is supposed to be made in Germany, at least the wood block is made in China.
Customer Rating: Summary: great quality Comment: Excellent quality, great balance, not too heavy, VERY sharp. Wooden block is also attractive and better-made than some of the ones that come with cheaper knives. I actually enjoy chopping veggies now!
Customer Rating: Summary: Not what they used to be Comment: I ordered this block set already having a couple of pieces of 4-star from some years back. These are not the same. The metal is _much_ thinner and the knives are correspondingly much lighter. For example, my old 6-inch 4-star chef's knife is significantly heavier than the 8-inch included in this set. This change in weight completely changes the feel of the knives - to my mind, not for the better.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great knives... could be better, though. Comment: I bought this knife set after reading many positive reviews. It has been a month since I received the set from Amazon and I'm impressed with the quality and sharpness. Each knife is sharp and beautiful.
My only complaint is that two small paring knives are a little too short to handle a variety of small cutting tasks. For example, I tried to cut apples but the knives are too short to cut the fruits in one stroke. I had to use a bigger utility knife from my old Chicago Cutlery knife set. BTW, the 5-inch utility knife has a serrated edge, which I believe is useful in certain tasks, but not really versatile. As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, you will need a regular utility knife. Six-inch utility knife would be great although it costs $65 if you buy it from an open stock. In this set, seven-inch Santoku and 8-inch Chef's knives are my favorites.
Overall, I'm impressed with the quality of this knife set... but I have a 20-year-old Gerber stamped knife set (12 piece block set) that is as sharp and durable as this Henckels set. The Gerber knife set cost me 1/3 of this Henckels knife set.
I'd recommend this knife set to anyone who is looking for excellent forged knives from Germany. If you're budget-conscious chefs, look elsewhere. Perhaps, Victorinox three-piece set that sells for $61 would be an ideal alternative to this Henckels knife set.
Customer Rating: Summary: Needs a regular utility knife Comment: The knives themselves are fantastic, but the set really needs a regular unserrated 6-inch utility knife. Since buying it separately is outrageously expensive, I've had to pull a poorer-quality knife back out for now since this is a knife I used frequently. I love the santoku, had never used one before, but it's amazing for chopping. The handles are a perfect size for me, a woman with larger hands, and a man would probably appreciate them as well (although the five-star series knives have even more substantial handles). I see other reviews saying they prefer the Twin series, but these are the higher-end knives, forged instead of stamped like the Twin knives. Overall I would recommend this set as a good starter, and suggest you buy other pieces like the utility knife, bread knife, and steak knives as you come into inheritances....
