Customer Rating: Summary: Why Mono? Comment: I'm not convinced that it's such a big improvement. In fact, I'm sure it's not. Some of my old stereo cd versions seem crisp compared to the mono versions which seem a bit dull. And, if I wanted to hear the music in mono I could just flip a switch.
I don't understand why it had to be mono. If you have the original tracks you can do remix in stereo just as easy. From what I understand about the Stereo set is that the kept the vocal on one side and instruments on the other and that's it's not worth the money (being remastered and not remixed). Why they couldn't make a clean, clear, crisp, decent stereo version is beyond me.
One thing I have read about the Mono set is that it's supposed to sound like it did when it originally played on AM radio or// Monaural record players. My thought is this.. Why do you want their music to sound like it's being transmitted from a crappy AM broadcast signal to a crappy AM receiver (or a really bad AM transistor radio), or if you had a mono record player with low-fi electronic and a needle arm being held down on a 45rpm vinyl grooved record by coins or washers with the music being pushed through a 2" to 4" paper speaker with a power rating of about 3 watts?
Some have comment about the cover art being so great. Well it's fine but you are wrapping questionable quality in a pretty box.
Customer Rating: Summary: Mono Please. Comment: Contains essential mixes of all albums ( minus Abbey Road, Let It Be and Yellow Submarine), singles and compilation appearances in glorious vintage mono sound. Yes the sound is condensed and may not be as effective as the remastered stereo versions but who cares they sound so good and pure. I don't have original mono copies of any Beatles LP's as a comparison, only the hollow duophonic stereo ones released in the 70's and 80's. Even my 87 CD versions of Revolver , Rubber Soul and White Album sound better than those.
The whole set does their recorded output a big solid favor. You would have to be a jerk to not think they sound better or a waste of money. I'm sure a remix of their albums will come but do you really want to change the recordings that much?
Expensive but money well spent. I enjoy the slight differences in Revolver and Sgt. Pepper andThe White Album the most. Rubber Soul, Help and A Hard Days Night are untouchable. These mixes are really concentrated and get into your head. I would even recommend one get them in remastered stereo. They are all brilliant.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Fab Four Comment: I've been a Beatles fan all of my life. From the first time I ever seen them on Ed Sullivan playing Lady Madonna. They hit this America like a whirlwind no one has ever seen. They swept all the girls off there feet, and well the guys just liKed the music flat out. This remake of all there music ,mono and stero is awsome.I dare to think what they would have been like with todays technology. But the mono cd's that I purchased really brings out the best of them all and there instruments.I would highly recomend this set to anyone who might be thinking about buying them.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is all I've been listening to.... Comment: As others have said, the mono box is indeed a revelation. I don't have expensive sound equipment, in fact I usually listen while driving, on the speakers my ten-year-old car came with, and yet here I am thoroughly enjoying myself. Having heard these songs, all of them, a million times in stereo, I couldn't wait to listen again in mono. I've gotten the most pleasure from Please Please Me, Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper (incredible), parts of the white album and the mono masters. Day Tripper and Paperback Writer sound so fabulous. When I heard Yesterday I was particularly astonished. I turned and was surprised to find Paul NOT sitting right next to me, because it sounded like he was. This was originally recorded, what, 45 years ago? Unbelievable clarity and beauty, and it's not even my favorite song. Pepper is just a totally different experience, especially if you've heard only the '87 CD before. She's Leaving Home no longer sounds weird. Lucy no longer sounds unweird. Everything is punchier and more together. Song after song, just incredible integration of music, vocals and spirit into holistic perfection. Were some people commenting negatively on the price? To me it was worth every penny. The packaging is so cool, too. To Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia: Thank You.
Customer Rating: Summary: 10 Stars for this mono set and you may need kleenex as well.... Comment: I am blown away by The Beatles Mono Set. It sounds So damn fabulous that I am immediately drawn back to 1964 where it all began and have to get out the Kleenex because it makes me tear-up to hear them sing all of these songs again remastered...wow! Beatle songs evoke such stirring emotions and are touchstones to the good times of an era that has no peer. Starting in 1964, thanks to The Beatles and all of the music and great musicians they helped launch became a hot bed of creativity like no other. I feel lucky to have been there!
I own all the original albums and play them even with their scratches. I own the Blue Box set from the 1980's as well. I own the older CD's and "Let It Be Naked" but nothing compares to the Mono set.
I honestly had no idea how moved I'd be by listening to this set. I was a bit cynical at first and did not order it on the first go round. Then I had a change of heart and thankfully, it was being sold on a 2nd round. I am glad I came to my senses because I see sets being re-sold for ridiculous prices since people thought they would only press and release 10,000 copies. There are too many Beatle fans to stop at 10,000 and too many people like me, who were slow to realize that this Mono Box Set is something like-no-other release of Beatle music. Now, I wish I could buy the stereo box set as well but I can't print money.
If you are a Beatle fan and if you have been on the fence about buying the Mono Set--get off the fence and buy it. You will be amazed and awed at how truly beautiful The Beatles sound and you will never regret spending the money. Now, if I could just afford that $15k sound system to listen to it on.....
I have to give a shout out to George Martin. Thank you Mr. Martin--we all know your contribution was valuable to Beatle music and together with those other 4 geniuses, you have insured that their music will thrill music lovers for hundreds of years and beyond. They are the classical composers of pop-music.
