Editorial Reviews:

"Kid Cudi is at the vanguard of a game-changing new generation of artists," said Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone. "He crosses musical boundaries with an appeal that goes beyond genre, format, race, language, and culture. Cudi lives easily in the hip-hop, indie rock, pop, and R&B worlds - a diversity that shows in his innovative music and his all-embracing persona. He is a born storyteller who brings a positive, life-affirming message to his brilliant lyrical flow and compelling music. There are no clichés in what Cudi does. He is a breath of fresh air - a dynamic and important new voice, not only in the next phase of hip-hop, but as a groundbreaking trendsetter who represents the future. I am thrilled to welcome Kid Cudi into the Universal Motown family." KID CUDI released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in July, 2008 as a free download sponsored by New York streetwear company 10 Deep, leading to an introduction and signing to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music imprint, and in turn, to Cudi's co-writing of four tracks on the platinum Kanye West album 808s & Heartbreak, including the Top 5 single, "Heartless" and stepping out in a featured vocal on "Welcome to Heartbreak." He followed this up with his first Official single; "DAY N NITE" "day 'n' nite" dominated with #1 rankings at multiple radio formats.

Summary: Different isn't always good 2 1/2 stars
Comment: A friend of mine has been going nuts about this cd for a long time now so I had to pick it up and check it out. I had heard Day N Nite and Pursuit of Happiness before grabbing the cd. I gotta say, it is different than most mainstream stuff out there now but when you get down to what the album is actually about...its just about being a stoner and the wierd dreams and nightmares stoners have.

Pursuit of Happiness is a great song, the best one on the album imo. The beats all kind of blend together, which makes sense since its a concept album and needs to follow a certain theme.

I'm not a stoner but I can see how one could get a lot out of this album. Cudi is alright at rapping, he doesn't change his cadence or schemes up too much and his lyrics range from very simple to slightly complex. He isn't the greatest MC ever but is a solid one.

The album is a hit or miss album. I like a few of the tracks and have been playing Pursuit of Happiness daily since it is awesome. Most people are either going to love this album or not get a lot out of it. If you like slow beats and lots of dream/stoner raps than you will love this. If your not a stoner and not into concept albums than stay away.

I'm not a stoner but do enjoy the occasional concept album so this gets 2 1/2 stars.

Summary: Cudi May be Hip-Hop but He is Not an MC
Comment: I picked up this album because it had gotten some favourable reviews and I was in the mood for something a bit different. Let me start by saying that the production on the album is outstanding, all of the beats feel right while still being unique. It really is a shame that the beats were used in this manner though. There are literally 4 verses of actual rhyme on the album, and 2 of those belong to Kanye and Common respectively (Common's verse is wack btw).

As an avid hip-hop listener I didn't feel out of place listening to this CD, likely due to the previously mentioned production but Cudi delivers most of his lyrics by singing as opposed to rapping.

I don't hate this CD, but it's not rap music. Purchase with caution and go in with an open-mind and you should be fine.

P.S. This album is neither revolutionary or classic. It's a nice little niche recording but that's about it.

Comment: I bought this album after hearing his hit 'Day and Night.' The rest of the album is just as catchy, fun and playful. It's also really different than all the other hip-hop out there. I highly recommend it.
