Customer Rating: Summary: Does its job unobtrusively Comment: I've used three different anti-virus programs in the past--two from a different company and currently this one from McAfee. I've been using McAfee for almost a month now on a computer running Windows XP. In that time, I've not noticed any slowdowns or deleterious effects on system performance caused by this software. Also, there are no intrusive pop-ups. You set it up, and it just does its job. That's all I expect of anti-virus software.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good but SLOW Comment: Upon installation I as relieved at just how easy it was. I installed it on both our XP box and our Vista Box. And was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install. I've tried other programs that were tedious or even complicated to install. This one was not, it installed like a breeze and even updated easily. The problems begin once its installed. Computer performance as immediately impacted system wide. At first I thought it as simply doing a scan and so I let it run overnight. The next day it as still slow. Then I tried to surf the web. This program brought web surfing to a crawl. Again I thought that once I was surfing for a while it would do whatever it is doing in the background and things would improve. This was not the case. After a couple of days of optimistic waiting to see if it would get any better I finally gave up and un-installed it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best of the options I've tried Comment: I've always been disappointed at the options available for good virus protection. Between using McAfee and Norton on various machines, I think McAfee is a bit better, but I'm not in love with it. It slows down the machine at inopportune times, is constantly installing updates and asking for reboots, and I'm not even really sure how well I am protected at any given time. However, Norton is really the pits when it comes to system usability while it is running or doing something, so stick with McAfee if you're already using it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not entirely impressed, slowed down computer Comment: I had AVG Free installed on my kids computer and decided to try this one out on there. The setup is simple enough but I've noticed that it has tremendously slowed down their computer. It's ok that it's protecting the computer from viruses but AVG was also doing that without slowing down the computer the way McAfee does. Too much bells and whistles for me. I've already taken it off and reinstalled AVG.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bottom line is still to be vigilant when on-line Comment: Over the past year we have been using McAfee Internet Security 2009 on one of our home computers, while the other computers have Norton Internet Security 2009 running on them. There are no significant differences between the two except for appearance and ease of use, which is highly subjective.
This year we upgraded to the McAfee Total Protection 2010 and except for a few additional features, it is not that much different from McAfee Internet Security 2009. Total Protection includes an Advanced Site Advisor Plus which according to McAfee identifies and prevents users from clicking on harmful web site links in their browser, e-mail or instant messages. There is also Anti-Theft for file protection, an addition which has to be downloaded from the McAfee website.
McAfee claims that their active protection `provides instant protection and the highest detection rates against today's threats'. However, without doing real in-depth testing, there is no way at home we could verify this claim which is probably the same as all the other similar products out there.
While Norton's Internet Security has a similar claim, users can see when last the virus definitions were updated, usually every five minutes or less. This is not easily apparent with the McAfee product though real-time protection is probably running in the background.
I did not detect any noticeable difference in my computer's performance which is not the best to begin with, given that it's Vista Home Edition on 2 Gigs of RAM. However, the installation did not go smoothly. It may have been Vista, or maybe my computer, but it was a royal pain. First, I had to remove the old version, and then re-boot, install the new version, then re-boot again, after which it never launched! I un-installed and then tried to re-install, and got a message that something was wrong with Java on my machine and was referred to a resource on McAfee's web site. It was necessary to execute two .dll files which adjusted my registry, then download another file from McAfee to totally remove their product from my computer, THEN re-install.
It finally worked, BUT registering it with McAfee in order to get the updates was another issue which I wouldn't go into here.
Having said that, and since Amazon's Product Description and other reviewers have listed the main features of Total Protection 2010, I'll just list some of the ones that I like:
- McAfee Quick Clean tool to remove unwanted clutter.
- Advanced Home Protection which manages and monitors your home network for intruders
There are other tools which are not absolutely necessary, and probably add to product bloat, but are quite interesting nevertheless like Hacker Watch, Visual Tracker, Traffic Monitor and Virus Map.
In the final analysis, notwithstanding the fact that all the various Internet Security suites/anti-virus software that are currently available can assist in identifying and offering some protection from online threats, the bottom line is to be very vigilant and smart when using the internet to browse, e-mail or IM.
