Comment: My teenage daughter has been listening to Muse for about a year or so with her college buddies, while I was listening to other stuff: Gomez, Radiohead, Porcurpine Tree, etc. When Resistance came out, my daughter kept telling me I should listen to it, but I just didn't get around to it (was it resistance?!). So about 2 weeks ago I finally asked for her Resistance CD. After 1 listen I heard enough to immediately recognize that I was going to have to listen to it several times to get through the layers, and to let each song reveal itself to me. So after 10 or so listens, I am really impressed with every song on this album. Right now, I am not tired of any of them, even though I thought I wouldn't like some of the more Maroon5 sounding stuff ("I Belong To You", "Uprising") after the first listen. But listening straight thru this CD, I am not reaching for the Next button on my Zune. I appreciate and enjoy the song order straight thru. Matthew Bellamy is obviously equally comfortable and expressive on guitar and keyboards. There are the obvious nods to Queen, Radiohead, Travis (on steroids), and positive Porcupine Tree (like the crunchy guitar outtake on "Unnatural Selection"). "Exogenesis Symphony" is breathtaking in its beauty and quiet power. When it's over, it leaves such a sweet taste in your mouth, you are ready to hit play and go thru them all again! I have been going back now to Absolution and Black Holes to hear older stuff. The engineering on Absolution is a bit more muffled that Black Holes and The Resistance. The Resistance is crisp and punchy -- really clear and engaging. Just excellent stuff! Customer Rating: Summary: bravo! Comment: bravo- muse has done it again! combining the sounds of early radiohead with the classic sound of queen, and their own ecclectic sound for the modern rocker, muse never fails to impress. like most other albums, you need to listen to the whole album several times to fully appreciate the genius in the music. at first a few tracks stand out (tracks 3,4,6 & 8)- classic muse, but you learn to love rest when you listen a few times! i am a big muse fan, and i rate this album among their best- a definite "keeper" for the modern rock music lover... That was pretty funny. I'm an "old man" that has just recently discovered Muse (after hearing "Knights of Cydonia" on Guitar Hero when it first came out) and finding a lot to enjoy here. Part of the reason that Muse gets a bad rap is because 1. they sound so much like Queen and U2 (listen to "Map of the Problematique" again if you don't agree with the U2 reference), and 2. most of their stuff never makes it onto radio, at least not enough for DJ's to tell listeners who they are. This is a crying shame. Back in my day, we had "emo" too, except we called it "glam", and the artists were considered ground-breaking. It's too bad that we have degenerated into a society where we don't appreciate songs on the basis of whether or not we actually enjoy them - we have to analyze the details of their construction and bash every artist who emulates one of their glam-heyday heroes. So is Resistance Muse's way of getting onto the radio? There's nothing wrong with this Muse CD - it might even be my favorite one by them if I had never heard Black Hole and Revelations - but it certainly represents a shift in how they view themselves and how they want the public to view them. This is a step in the direction of being less serious, and being more fun, in my opinion. My advice for the first-time listener is to embrace Black Holes, give this CD a shot if you decide you like what you hear there, and not dig too deep on The Resistance, since Muse will be what they want to be, and we (as listeners) should appreciate them for what they create. Long time listeners will want to read Chris Billings' review (above) for track info and comments, although I would have to say I place this CD just slightly ahead of Absolution for listen-ability.
