Summary: *****DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA *****
Comment: There are alot of defective zi8's waiting to be bought, don't take the chance. I read the reviews and didn't listen and ended up with a defective camera with GODDAMN LINES. No I will not take it back to the store or send it for repairs because I read how Kodak treated one customer seeking repairs and how another customer got 5 bad replacements on YouTube. I blame myself for ignoring the many warning about this camera. Save yourself from a bad experience and disappointment.

To make myself feel better,

I WILL BE SMASHING THIS CAMERA TO PIECES WITH A BIG HEAVY ROCK OR A DISCARED BRICK.

I will do this and post it on YouTube, The title will be "Smashing the Zi8."

Your taking a chance if you buy this camera.

Summary: You can't beat this for the price
Comment: If your expectations are realistic (it is not a $1000 camcorder or a $10,000 pro video camera) you will be pretty pleased with this recorder. Be sure to upgrade the firmware. Mine was a little flaky till I upgraded to 1.06 (it came with 1.03).

Pros:
+ Cost. It is amazing what you get for the price.
+ Size. It is about the size of a big smartphone, so it is pocketable.
+ It comes with all the cables you could want for it (HDMI output, composite output, etc).
+ It has a macro mode which is very useful for when you need to get close to things. Just be sure to turn macro mode off when you aren't using it as the camera will not focus on distant objects any more when in macro mode.
+ Uses SD cards for memory so you can carry more than one and upgrade the capacity as SD cards continue to get bigger and cheaper
+ The controls are great. I love the joystick you press to start/stop recording and playback. It is easy enough to hit when you mean to yet you won't hit it by accident, either.
+ Mass storage device compliant. Meaning you don't actually need to install any drivers for the camera and can just copy the files off like you would any other disk.
+ The video editing software is on the device. If you are away from home you can easily install the software on the other person's computer to edit and convert your videos without having to download anything.
+ The included software is decent enough for free. It offers enough capabilities for making Youtube or PSP videos without buying anything else.

Cons:
- I would rather it have a standard mini-USB port on it instead of the fold out USB plug. I know this is supposed to be a feature and they copied it from the Flip (and then improved it by making it flexible rather than rigid), but I don't care for it. It's not a big deal for me to have a USB to miniUSB cable around since everything uses it from my digital camera, to my blackberry, to my harmony remote control, to my GPS.
- The simple and limited menus do make this very easy to use for novices, but they are somewhat limiting for more advanced users.
- No live playback to external video monitor during recording. When you hook up the device to an external monitor it automatically goes into playback mode.
- MOV file format. I'm not sure why everybody feels the need to use a proprietary Apple format for video, but that seems to be the case. I resent having to convert all my videos (and install Quicktime just do be able to do that), but since every other device manufacturer seems to do the same thing, I can't be too harsh on Kodak for going along.

As you can see from the cons there's some room for improvement, but given the price and the competition I don't see a reason to give it any less than 5 stars.

Summary: Better than I expected. Very good picture and quality sound.
Comment: I am pleased with the Zi8. the picture quality was very good even in low ligh. In a college theater. The sound was really good, I did purchase the external mic as suggested in one of the previous reviews. I do have a question does anyone have issues uploading to YouTube? My first 4 tries were great now I have time out issues.

Summary: A Sweet Little Camera--But Buy A Memory Stick!
Comment: I wanted a very portable, easy-to-use, basic camera for family use, and this fits the bill perfectly. Picture quality is very good (high density is available) and focus is fine. I like the fact that you can switch from "landscape" mode (most uses -- a meter or more away) to "macro" mode (for ultra close-ups just inches away). My biggest concern was how my less-than-steady hand would affect jumpiness, but it's no worry at all.

What I failed to recognize when I bought the camera was that it really can't be used without a memory card; internal memory gives you maybe 20 seconds of video at the lowest resolution. Memory cards are anywhere from off-brand cheap to high-end expensive. After reading reviews, I decided on the moderately priced Kodak brand and went for the 8 MB card ($39.95 + free shipping at HSN as of Nov 09). You'll also want to buy a case, since the lens has no cap.

The biggest disappointment is the zoom (digital not optical), which is very jumpy. I've read online that Kodak has a firmware update that you can download to resolve this problem, however. Another thing to consider: apparently XP has a problem reading the 8 MB memory card. But there's a download on the Microsoft site to fix this (KB934428). I haven't done either of these yet, but plan to do so.

Summary: So far, sooo great
Comment: I ordered the camera last week and then after reading more reviews here and elsewhere, I immediately decided to cancel the order. Unfortunately, Amazon had already shipped and they told me to either refuse the package, or to try it and then return it, no charge, if it didn't work. It arrived yesterday and I fully expected to return it today. We spent the night playing with it, however, and we are not returning it--it works fabulously. Perhaps it came with all the firmware updates installed because we had no issues with picture, with sound quality, etc. We didn't experience any of the issues other reviewers have mentioned--there was no high pitched sound, no lines, no problems filming in low-light. We use a Mac and the uploading was effortless--no additional software needed. We were able to play clips in quicktime, in iphoto or in imovie. Image quality is very good. I don't normally write reviews and I typically wouldn't write a review after having so little experience with an item, but I feel that this product is getting a bad rap and so far we love it.
