Editorial Reviews:

The compact body of the ZR1 houses a LEICA DC Vario-Elmar lens that ranges from 25mm wide-angle all the way to 200mm telephoto. In addition to its superb image rendering, the Leica DC lens lets you capture photos clearly without having to worry about hand-shake in all kinds of travel situations, thanks to the double corrective power of POWER O.I.S. as compared to previous models.Enjoy high-speed 1.1-second start-ups, AF speeds of approximately 0.27 second, and up to five consecutive shots at 2.3 frames per second with full resolution. You can also take up to 330 photos with a single battery charge (CIPA). This comfortable level of performance lets you capture even the most fleeting shutter chances.Simply switch to iA mode, and leave everything up to the camera. It automatically activates six detection and correction functions including POWER O.I.S., and lets you easily preserve your magnificent travel memories. The camera automatically arranges photos and movies using data such as the dates and locations of where they were taken. This makes it easier to enjoy your travel images in slideshows of photos and movies.

Summary: Great digital camera.
Comment: This was a very good purchase for us. We wanted something lighter weight and small enough to slip into a pocket for everyday use. The camera is very user friendly and we were vary happy with the quality of the photos and the video!

Summary: Little gem with somewhat disappointing image quality
Comment: Got this little gem a few days ago. I could get this camera or a bigger panasonic ZS1 for the same price, I chose this for the portability and (supposedly) faster operation.

First of all, it is really small for its capability, just a bit longer than the canon SD400 I own. Therefore it is very pocketable.

It is also very fast at operation, as promised. It start fast, focus fast, and does not show much shutter lag. So it is a very nimble camera.

One feature ZR1 does not have, but the ZS1 has, is that ZS1 could shoot continuously at 2fps indefinitely, while ZR1 is limited at 3 or 5 pictures, depending on image compression/size. I wish that I knew this ahead of my purchase.

One area does disappoint me a bit though. It is the image quality and the noise. Granted, it is a small camera with a tiny sensor on which 12MP is squeezed on. I don't really appreciate the trend of "more pixel is better". But that is the way it is. I have owned Canon S30, which had 3MP on the 1/1.8 sensor. I also have a canon SD400 and a DSLR pentax K100D. The canon S30 is known for low noise and high quality picture. The canon sd400 is not quite as clean, but manageable. Needless to say, the K100D is nearly noise free below ISO400. So I am somewhat spoiled by noise free pictures.

ZR1 pictures showed quite a bit noise, even at ISO80, the lowest. The pictures do not appear very sharp, giving a feeling of haziness. Comparison of pictures of ZR1, ZS1 and Canon SX120 from a review website showed that ZS1 shows noise of similar extend and pattern (kind of block of noise, not single pixel), while the Canon SX120 pictures have similar level of noise, but finer in grainess. As the result, the pictures from the Canon SX120 looked better before and after noise reduction treatment, compared to ZR1, ZS1 pictures.

Remember though, the analysis above is pretty much pixel peeking. I did not expect perfect photos from a camera this small, at this price. I will keep the camera, as it fits my needs and budget, as a pocket camera for outdoor/travel/tourism with great zoom. The photos are quite decent when not looked at pixel-by-pixel, and get better with some noise reduction.

Bottom line is, ZR1 is a good camera with limitations. Keep this in mind when you purchase it, and keep it at low ISO when you use it. Then you will be fine.

Summary: Very good all around camera
Comment: After having an unfortunate accident with my Panasonic FS7, I needed a new camera. I dallied with the Pentax Optio P80--a horrendous experience--and promptly returned that pitiful excuse for a camera in favor of another Panasonic, the ZR1. All in all, I am fairly impressed with the picture quality and the HD video quality. I really like that it shoots video at 30 frames per second as opposed to some pricier Canon or Sony models which shoot 15 fps. Although not a razor thin camera by any means, it is still very, very small and portable.

I really just have two criticisms:
(1) Telescopic lens: the housing to the telescopic lens is pretty flimsy. It is the same housing that my FS7 had, and the reason I had to trash my FS7 was that it took a minor tumble on a hardwood floor right after I finished taking a zoom shot. That flimsy plastic housing dented and cracked, and jacked up the camera. I have played with Canons and Sonys that have sturdy metallic housings that probably would have withstood this.

(2) Shooting mode dial: I don't really care for the dial that you have to turn to go from Intelligent Auto (which works very well by the way) to Video to Manual to Scene modes. Well, I suppose I wouldn't mind it so much if it had an IA button like the FS7 did which would toggle between Intelligent Auto and your last other mode you used (e.g. Video, which I used to toggle back and forth with a lot). Minor hassle having to turn that dial rather than having a 'hotkey'.

All in all though, a great camera.

Summary: Grainy, Choppy, Noisy Pictures
Comment: The pictures taken with this camera are poor. I played with all the settings, and even brought in extra lighting for indoor shots. Every picture, was grainy/noisy. The detail was very poor even for a lower end point and click. My cell phone takes about the same quality shots.

I'm returning this camera today. If it can't take a picture, who cares about the rest of the bells and whistles.

Summary: Great point and shoot camera!
Comment: I have had the ZR1 for almost a week and couldn't be happier. I originally purchased the ZS1 and returned it due to blur in photos with any subject movement (my fast moving 3 and 5 year old children) - the ZS1 was a huge disappointment for me. I gave Panasonic one last try with the ZR1 (after reading some great things about it on CNET). I am so glad that I purchased the ZR1! This camera surpasses the ZS1 in every action photo of my children that I have taken - no more blur! I'm attributing it to the Intelligent ISO, which claims to automatically detect subject motion.

This camera has some great features and is simple to use (for me, I'm an amateur with the camera). The ZR1 is quick to take a shot. I like that the camera has AF tracking that works well and intelligent exposure which is supposed to help eliminate over or underexposure. So far my close up shots and shots from a distance have been great! There is an E.Zoom button which lets you instantly zoom in to 8X - I really like that feature.

I didn't know this prior to my purchase...this camera has an optical zoom ability of 15.6X! This is AMAZING!!! Just figured it out! When you select the E.Zoom (extended optical zoom) button twice, the camera automatically zooms in to 15.6X and reduces the image to 3 MP without deterioration of the photo quality. (You simply select the button again to get the camera back to normal zoom) This extra optical zoom is a bonus to me!

I have not used the video option yet so I can't comment on that, it's nice to have but wasn't my primary reason in purchasing the camera.

All the buttons on the camera are easy to use - everything is very user friendly. So far, I don't have a bad thing to say about this camera. The ZR1 is great and I'm glad that I made the purchase!
