Customer Rating: Summary: 7 = 0 Comment: Guess what happens every time I try to load this....yep, it crashes, even after 3 hours on the phone with MS and Dell.
Therefore Windows 7 = 0 stars (had to give it one star to publish this review).
Customer Rating: Summary: Read the requirements first!!! Comment: There was nothing in the Amazon site about needing 1Gig available memory in your system. There were a number of other system requirements that were not obvious from the Amazon site. I would recommend going to the Microsoft site and running the Windows 7 checkout service. This will show all the incompatibility issues and validate other system programs and drivers. It would have been very useful for Amazon to provide this link. I now have a copy of Windows 7 I can't use until I complete upgrades. I would have delayed this purchase until I was ready if the Amazon site was more helpful but then I guess it was not to their advantage.

Customer Rating: Summary: Microsoft Windows 7 is a greatly inproved PC operating system Comment: The upgrade from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Home Premium was very fast and easy (make sure to back up ALL files needed for re-installation!). Re-installation of all programs is necessary when upgrading from Windows XP, however not from Vista. Consult Microsoft's recommendations and precautions before upgrading your OS.
It should be noted that not all programs will run on Windows 7. Be sure to check for compatibility of your programs with Windows 7 before installing the new OS! Also, run the free compatibility check offered by Microsoft to ensure your PC hardware will run Windows 7 properly.
I think the new features in Windows 7 offer a greatly enhanced experience to the user(s). Also, the Family Pack can save considerable money. I am very pleased with it.
The most significant observation I have made so far is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to be a 'resource hog' at all (like Vista Home Premium), so programs and documents open very quickly (at least on my PC).
I recommend the upgrade from Windows XP and Vista to Windows 7, if there are no compatibility issues.
Customer Rating: Summary: Super Comment: I installed it on a 3-year old Toshiba A135-S4666 laptop and a 5-year old Dell E510 desktop (with an ATI video card and Intel gigabit adapter.) I did both after backing up my files to my fileserver, then doing a clean install by booting to the disc, choosing custom and deleting my old partition, and then letting it do it's thing. I didn't have to insert my old media as proof or anything... it was pretty smart about that somehow (good because it would have taken me awhile to find it.)
I was suprised it came with two discs: one is the 32-bit version and one is the 64-bit. I wanted to install the 64-bit. Unfortunately, it alerted me that my Toshiba doesn't support 64-bit. So I put in the 32. The Dell took the 64 though. I imagine that would be more important for people who are trying to run old 32-bit software and don't want to or can't upgrade- you know who you are ;)
It's really fast and stable... good looking, etc. On my computers, the drivers were automatic (I guess Tosh and Dell pick good parts?) I also installed Windows Live and Microsoft Security Essentials (both free!!!!) So I've got the email, antivirus, antispyware all running. Only thing left is to reinstall Office, but I'll get around to that...
Random thoughts: Dual monitor support is much improved... you can move windows around to different screen fills by dragging around the top bar. The task bar is much more organized. The media center works great.. connects right up to my xbox... and my tv tuner card even works (had to download the updated software from hauppage.) Internet TV is cute.. I imagine this will grow in time. "Green" features work better... wake from standby works better, etc. This sounds lame, but I like the backgrounds, too.
Customer Rating: Summary: Windows 7 Family Pack Comment: The price was right to upgrade 3 machines. I had to add memory to 2 machines of the 3. On one machine I had to replace the video card. (It had a Creative video and I did not want to bother finding a new driver). It installed but I could only get 800 x 600 resolution. I also had to upgrade one machine that had windows 2000 to XP so I could upgrade. I was an Outlook user, but apparently microsoft no longer supports the older Outlooks on Vista and Windows 7. I was using windows mail on my Vista Laptop, but that is also out of fashion with Microsoft. I switched to Thunderbird for all three machines. I just won't use a Microsfot mail program again becuase they keep switching support. If you are already using Outlook, you need to load Thunderbird under XP or 2000 and inport your files and address book becuase Thundbird requires Outlook to be running to export from it, the export the data in Thunderbird before intalling Windows 7.
